In the 1st quarter 2021

Poultry meat, slaughtered livestock and the volume of landed catch registered a year-on-year drop, while egg production increased

According to the data gathered by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM), In the first three months of 2021, the egg production stood at 6.1 million units, increasing by 39.1% year-on-year.

In the same period, the poultry meat totalled 738.2 tonnes, decreasing by 21.4% compared to 1st quarter of 2020.

Between January and March 2021, the weight of the slaughtered livestock reported by of the Slaughter Center of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (CARAM) reached 191.2 tonnes, falling by 3.8% year-on-year.

The data on landed catch provided by the Regional Directorate of Fisheries show a decrease in volume (-8.6%) and an increase in first sale receipts (+2.5%) compared to the same period of last year. In the first three months of the current year, the volume of landed catch stood at 695.2 tonnes generating first sale receipts of 2.6 million euros.

The decrease in volume was mainly driven by the drop in the catch of black scabbardfish (-28.2%), but chub mackerel (-43.9%) and blue jack mackerel (-10.9%) also contributed to the overall decline, which the significant increase  of tuna and tuna-like species by 123.1% year-on year did not offset. However this species (+103.6%) and blue jack mackerel (+50.1%) were responsible for the overall increase in value. The drop in the value of black scabbardfish (-30.2%) and chub mackerel (-45.1%) prevented a larger increase. Nonetheless, 60.6% of the landed catch in the reference quarter was of black scabbardfish.

In the reference period, the mean value of fish landed was €3.73 (€3.32 in the same period of 2020), with the average price for tuna and similar reaching €5.47 (5.99€ in the first quarter of 2020). In the case of  the black scabbardfish the mean value was €3.02 (€3.10 in the first three months of the last year). It should be mentioned that these ratios exclude the unloaded fish destined for self-consumption.

Production of aquaculture went up by 7.3% year-on-year in the 1st quarter 2021

From now on, DREM will release quarterly data on aquaculture in maritime waters. The growing importance of this industry in the Autonomous Region of Madeira led to the implementation of a new survey directed to the 3 enterprises of the sector in the Region. Data for the four quarters of 2020 were collected in February of the current year and in April the enterprises reported the data for the 1st quarter 2021. The Regional Directorate for Sea contributed by providing information that helped in the data collection and in designing the questionnaire. A time series on aquaculture production will be released when the “1976-2020 Time Series on Agriculture and Fisheries” becomes available later this year.

According to the information gathered by DREM from the aquaculture enterprises operating in the Region, in the 1st quarter 2021, 336.6 tonnes of sea bream were produced, up by 7.3% year-on-year. The sales topped 1.6 million euros, rising by only 0.5%.

In 2020, the production of sea bream reached 1.234,6 tonnes, with the sales standing at 6.2 million euros. By markets, the national market (Mainland Portugal and the Azores) accounted for 83.4% of the sales value, and the regional market for 16.4%. Exports for the EU were minimal (0.1%).
