Value of sales of wine with PDO “Madeirense” and PGI “Terras Madeirenses” increased compared with the previous year, while the value of spirits remained stable

According to data provided by the IVBAM - Instituto do Vinho, do Bordado e do Artesanato da Madeira, in 2025, the bottling of wine with Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) “Madeirense” recorded a decrease of 30.7% in volume compared with the previous year, not exceeding 135.4 thousand litres. In contrast, wine with Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) “Terras Madeirenses” increased by 20.8%, reaching 18.2 thousand litres.

In 2025, sales of PDO “Madeirense” wine (excluding sparkling wine) totalled approximately 148.0 thousand litres, corresponding to 1 563.7 thousand euros, reflecting increases of 12.3% in volume and 23.7% in value compared with the previous year. For PGI “Terras Madeirenses” wine, sales amounted to around 16.6 thousand litres, equivalent to 151.9 thousand euros (+36.2% and +82.5%, respectively, compared with 2024).

In terms of the commercialisation of these wines, the regional market accounted for 75.8% of the volume and 64.5% of the first-sale value.

In the year under review, analysis of PDO “Madeirense” wine sales shows that white wines were the most sold (46.6% in volume and 58.1% in value), followed by rosé (34.0% in volume and 20.5% in value) and red wines (19.4% in volume and 21.4% in value). For PGI “Terras Madeirenses” wines, red wines were the most traded (57.0% in volume and 66.9% in value), followed by white wines (37.7% in volume and 29.0% in value).

Production of spirits decreased in volume in 2025

Spirits produced and bottled in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) totalled 976.4 thousand litres in 2025, representing a decrease of 6.2% compared with the previous year.

In terms of production and bottling, “Madeira Rum” and “Fruit Spirit” recorded decreases of 16.1% and 30.1% in volume, respectively, compared with the previous year. The remaining spirits showed increases, with “Liqueurs” standing out (+8.2% compared with 2024). In terms of shares, “Madeira Rum” accounted for 53.9% of total production and bottling in 2025, while liqueurs represented 45.0%, of which 60.7% corresponded to “Poncha da Madeira”.

With regard to the commercialisation of these beverages (considering only those resulting from regional production), total sales amounted to approximately 991.9 thousand litres (-4.7% compared with 2024), generating 8.6 million euros in first-sale revenue (a value identical to the previous year). Of this total, 92.2% of the volume and 91.5% of the value were recorded within the Region.
