In turn, the amount of non-performing loans in NFCs stood, in December 2025, at 18.4 million euros, corresponding to an increase of 5.8 million euros (+46.0%) compared to the same month of 2024. Thus, the non-performing loans ratio in the Region increased between the end of 2024 and the end of 2025, rising from 0.7% to 1.0%, approaching the national average (1.9% and 2.0%, respectively). Consequently, the differential between the ARM and the country narrowed from 1.2 pp at the end of 2024 to 1.0 pp at the end of 2025.

The percentage of NFC sector debtors with non-performing loans was, at the end of 2025, 13.8%, slightly below the national average (14.2%). This situation contrasts with that observed at the beginning of 2024, when the regional percentage stood at 14.9%, above the national figure (14.6%).

In the households and Non-Profit Institutions Serving Households (NPISH) sector, the balance of loans granted amounted, in December 2025, to 3 285.9 million euros, above the 3 031.6 million euros recorded at the end of the previous year (+8.4%). Of that balance, 73.9% related to the "housing" segment, whilst the remaining 26.1% was intended for "consumption and other purposes".

Compared to December 2024, the balance of loans granted to the first segment increased by 8.2%; in the second segment, growth was slightly higher, at +9.0%.

In turn, in the "consumption and other purposes" segment, the non-performing loans ratio was, in the same reference month, 2.9%, above the national figure (2.4%), with total non-performing loans reaching 24.6 million euros.

The number of debtors in the households and NPISH sector amounted to 104.4 thousand at the end of 2025, representing an increase of 1.4% compared to the same period of 2024. This growth is due primarily to the 1.6% increase recorded in the "consumption and other purposes" segment (89.1 thousand), as the number of debtors in the "housing" segment (42.8 thousand) increased by only +0.2%.

The percentage of debtors (households and NPISH) with non-performing loans in the Region was, at the end of 2025, 6.3% in the ARM and 7.2% in Portugal. Compared to 2024, these percentages increased in the Region (+0.2 pp) and nationally (+0.1 pp).
