In the 1st quarter of 2018

Aggregate of withdrawals and purchases through automatic payment terminals registered a year-on-year increase of 5.5%

Data provided by the Interbank Services Society (SIBS) for the first quarter of 2018 show that the aggregate of cash withdrawals and purchases through automatic payment terminals (APT) increased by 5.5% compared with the same period of the previous year (below the 7.7% increase registered in Portugal). While the cash withdrawals went down by 1.6%, the purchases through ATP rose by 11.3%. In turn, compared to the corresponding period of the previous year, the amount spent on payments went up by 0.2%.

Breaking down the data concerning withdrawals, the figures show that in the period of reference, international cards were used to withdraw 12.7 million Euros  (17.5% y-o-y decrease), while the amount of withdrawals using national cards totalled 140.9 million Euros, a 0.2% increase when compared with the same period of 2017.

At the country level, national withdrawals rose by 2.8% while the international withdrawals increased by 1.9%. The y-o-y average growth in withdrawals was 2.8%.

Concerning purchases through automatic payment terminals, the year-on-year change rate for the first quarter 2018 was higher in Portugal (+11.5%) than in Madeira (+11.3%). In the Region, the purchases through APT using  international cards increased by 12.3% while those made using national cards rose by 11.0%.
