In the 3rd quarter of 2018

Aggregate of cash withdrawals and purchases through automatic payment terminals registered a year-on-year increase of 3.8%

Data provided by the Interbank Services Society (SIBS) for the third quarter of 2018 show that the aggregate of cash withdrawals and purchases through automatic payment terminals (APT) increased by 3.8% compared with the same period of the previous year (below the 5.9% increase registered in Portugal. In the aforementioned period, the cash withdrawals increased by 0.4% and the purchases through ATP rose by 6.2%. In turn, the amount spent on payments had a 8.2% year-on-year (y-o-y) increase.

International cards were used to withdraw 18.4 million Euros (12.8% y-o-y decrease) while the amount of withdrawals using national cards totalled 159.2 million Euros, up by 2.2% when compared with the corresponding period of 2017.

At the country level, national withdrawals rose by 2.8% and the international withdrawals decreased by 2.5%. The y-o-y average growth in withdrawals was 2.3%.

Concerning purchases through automatic payment terminals, the year-on-year change rate for the third quarter 2018 was higher in Portugal (+8.5%) than in Madeira (+6.2%). In the region, the purchases through APT using national cards increased by 8.1% while those using international cards rose by 0.7%.

Between January and September 2018, the aggregate of cash withdrawals and purchases through ATP grew by 4.3% in Madeira and by 6.3% in Portugal, vis-à-vis the same period of 2017.
