Cash withdrawals and purchases through automatic payment terminals increased
Data provided by the Interbank Services Society (SIBS) show that in 2014 cash withdrawals increased by 1.6% compared to 2013, while purchases through automatic payment terminals grew by 3.3%. In turn, the amount spent on payments had a 9.4% increase.
Breaking down the data concerning withdrawals, we can see that in the period of reference, international cards were used to withdraw 71.9 million euros (+5.7%), while the amount of withdrawals using national cards totalled 589.5 million euros, 1.2% more than in 2013.
At the country level, the rates of change were lower for total (+1.2%) and national withdrawals (+0.5%), but higher in the case of international withdrawals (+10.7%).
Concerning purchases through automatic payment terminals, the year-on-year change rate for the third quarter was higher in Portugal (+3.6%) than in Madeira (+3.3%, as mentioned above).
