From the 1st quarter of 2018 onwards

DREM releases new information on Transports statistics

Starting from this quarter, DREM will provide data on the activity of cableways operating in the Region, based on information directly collected by this Regional Directorate from the companies that operate these equipments.

In the second half of 2017, contacts were also made with ACAP - Automobile Association of Portugal, to provide DREM with data  on new motor vehicles purchased by units resident in the Autonomous Region of Madeira. This information is consistent with the numbers published annually by  Statistics Portugal (INE) and by DREM in the Regional Statistical Yearbook. It should be noted that from now onwards the data on the Sales registration of motor vehicles made by the Vehicle Registration Offices refer only to used vehicles.

In the field of maritime transport, information on the movement of recreational vessels in the marinas of the Region is now available, based on information collected by DREM from the Customs of Funchal.

Land transport - Passenger transport by bus dropped year-on-year; Acquisition of light vehicles and passenger transport by cable car increased.

According to the data compiled by DREM, the passenger transport by bus in the reference period stood at 6.3 million (-0.2%). Between January and March of 2018, 4.1 million passengers were counted in the urban lines (year-on year change rate of -4.6%) and 2.2 million in the intercity lines (year-on year change rate of +9.0%).

In the first quarter of 2018, and compared to the first quarter of 2017, there was a 4.6% increase in the acquisition of light passenger car by units resident in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (882) and a 2.3% decrease in light cargo vehicles (129). Compared to the same period of last year, the total number of registries went up by 36 (a year-on-year increase of 3.7%)

In the first three months of 2018, the Vehicle Registration Offices of Madeira registered a transfer of 2,966 used vehicles, 85.8% of which were light passenger and 13.3% light cargo vehicles. 25 heavy used vehicles were registered, about 0.8% of the total. Compared to the year-ago period, the vehicle sale registries of used cars dropped by 15.4%.

In the first quarter of 2018 there were 200,468 tickets sold on cableways in the Region (+10.9% compared to the same period last year), 91.0% of which for adults and 4.4% for children and the remaining 4.6% for other type of users (eg: farmers, residents, students, etc…). Total revenue exceeded € 2.2 million, an increase of 11.7% compared to the first quarter of 2017.

Air transport – Passengers in Madeira’s airports increased by 2.4% year-on-year

In air transport, the airports of Madeira and Porto Santo recorded a movement of 701.6 thousand passengers during the 1st quarter of 2018, a 2.4% increase compared to the same period of 2017.

In sea transport, the Ports authority counted 89 cruise ships in the seaport of Funchal in the first quarter of 2018 (up by fifteen compared to the first quarter of the previous year). The number of passengers in transit passangers also increased by 31.2%. The seaport of Funchal received a total of 182,663 transit passangers, the majority of them (92.5%) Europeans. Between January and March 2018, Germans were the most common nationality among those who visited Madeira aboard cruise ships (101,459, a year-on-year rate of change of 47.4%), followed by the British (48,238, +11.2%) and the Austrians (3,390, +16.0%).

The passenger movement in the Madeira – Porto Santo sea line decreased by 1.4% year-on-year.

Regarding the movement of goods in Madeira's ports, the statistics for the 1st quarter of 2018 show a positive trend vis-a-vis the same period of 2017 (+2.2%) determined by the increase (+3.5%) in the unloaded goods, since the volume of loaded goods declined (-5.3%).

169 recreational vessels entered in the marinas of the Region in the first quarter of 2018, representing a decrease of 13.3% compared to the first quarter of 2017. These vessels carried 661 crew members and passengers, down by 283 from the same period last year.

DREM also releases today the publication “Transport statistics for the Autonomous Region of Madeira-2017” with data for land, air and sea transport.
