DREM releases information on Transports statistics for the 1st half of 2020 

Land transport – Pandemic determined a decline in the main indicators

According to the data compiled by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira, the passenger transport by bus in the 1st half of this year stood at 8.1 million. Between January and June of 2020, 5.3 million passengers were counted in the urban lines (year-on-year change rate of -38.2%) and 2.8 million in the intercity lines. In the 2nd quarter 2020, the number of transported passengers by bus was less than a third compared to the same quarter of the previous year.

In the first half of 2020 there were 170,001 tickets sold on cableways in the Region (-63.6% compared to the same period last year), 91.7% of which for adults, 4.0% for children and the remaining for other type of users (e.g.: farmers, residents, students, etc…). Total revenue was approximately € 2.0 million, a decrease of 62.8% compared to the first semester of 2019. In the 2nd quarter 2020 the number of tickets sold was only 3.2 thousand, representing a pronounced drop of 98.7% year-on-year.

In the first six months of 2020, the Vehicle Registration Offices of Madeira reported a transfer of 4,814 used vehicles, 81.3% of which were light passenger and 15.5% light cargo vehicles. 149 heavy used vehicles were registered, about 3.1% of the total. Compared to the year-ago period, the vehicle sale registries of used cars decreased by 27.9%. In the 2nd quarter there was a 52.5% drop compared to the same period of the previous year.

1,075 road accidents with police intervention were recorded in the first semester of 2020, with the number of victims standing at 392 (down by 246 from 2019, i.e. -38.6%). Among these, 353 were classified as slightly injured, 32 as seriously injured and 7 as dead victims.

Air transport – Passengers in Madeira’s airports decreased by 61.7% year-on-year

In air transport, the airports of Madeira and Porto Santo recorded a movement of 624.4 thousand passengers during the 1st half of 2020, a 61.7% decrease compared to the same period of 2019. The drop was more pronounced in the airport of Porto Santo (70.5%) than in the airport of Madeira (61.3%). In the 2nd quarter 2020, the passenger traffic in the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira sunk by 98.8%.

Maritime transport – Passenger traffic in the Madeira – Porto Santo sea line decreased as well as the movement of goods. 

In sea transport, the Ports authority counted 68 cruise ships in the seaport of Funchal in the first half of 2020 (down by 83 compared to the first half of the previous year). The number of passengers in transit also decreased by 54.4%. Due to the pandemic no cruise ships docked in the ports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira during the 2nd quarter 2020.

In the first half 2020, the passenger movement in the Madeira – Porto Santo sea line decreased by 60.4% year-on-year, to a total of 58,474. In the 2nd quarter 2020 the number of passengers in this line was about a third compared to the first semester of 2019.

Regarding the movement of goods in Madeira's ports, the statistics for the first half of 2020 show a negative trend vis-a-vis the same period of 2019 (-10.8%) which was shared by both loaded (-14.3%) and unloaded goods (-10.4%).

In the first half of 2020, 314 recreational vessels entered in the Region’s marinas, representing a 54.4% decrease compared to the first half of 2019. These vessels carried 731 crew members and passengers, down by 1 792 from the same period last year (-71.0%). In the 2nd quarter 2020, the drop was even more pronounced (-89.4%).
