DREM releases data on Road Traffic in the Autonomous Region of Madeira
The Regional Directorate of Statistics (DREM) today, for the first time, publishes information on traffic of the main regional roads of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (RAM), namely those that are in the direct jurisdiction of RAM, as well as concessions to VIALITORAL and the Road Concessionaire VIAEXPRESSO da Madeira, S.A., based on data provided to DREM by the Regional Directorate of Roads (DRE).
DRE makes this data available based on information taken from the traffic registration and control terminals located on its premises and on the counters installed on the roads.
Road traffic in Via Rápida and in Vias Expresso with a drop of more than 20% year-on-year
Between January and September 2020, the road traffic in Via Rápida and Vias Expresso fell by 20.2% and 21.2% year-on-year, respectively.
Considering both roads and breaking down the data by month, April unsurprisingly appears as the month with the highest drop year-on-year (65.3%). In fact, during this month, the emergency state was in place, with a large part of the population confined to their homes. From May onwards, there was a recovery, although the road traffic remained below last year’s figures, as the 8.4% decrease in September shows.
The annual data, available between 2012 and 2019, show a growing trend in traffic since 2014. In 2013, the number of vehicles counted in the abovementioned roads dropped by 1.4% over 2012, which is in line with the economic recession of that period, which led to a successive decrease of the Gross Domestic Product between 2011 and 2013.
Since 2014 the road traffic increased, also in line with economic growth measured by GDP (which is available until 2019) and also by the Regional Indicator of Economic Activity which increased year-on-year until February 2020. Although the year of 2020 is not yet finished, it is now clear that the road traffic figures will be the lowest of the available time series.
