[NOTE: Regarding the monthly publication of Tourism data for the year 2021, the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) will keep the model followed in the previous year, releasing an aggregate comprising the hotel sector, rural tourism, and local accommodation, independently of the number of beds. In turn, in its releases, Statistics Portugal (INE) excludes local accommodation establishments under 10 beds. In this press release and the tables published by DREM, the overall total for guests and overnight stays is higher when compared to INE’s. For the bed and room occupancy rates and revenue and personnel costs, the figures of DREM and INE are the same, since the local accommodation under 10 beds is not included in the compilation of these variables.]

In April 2021

Overnight stays in tourist accommodation establishments increased greatly compared to the year-ago month, but remain substantially below pre-pandemic levels

The first estimates for April 2021 show that 45.6% of the establishments had a guest flow (46.0% of the total tourist accommodation capacity). Rural tourism had the highest percentage of establishments with guests (65.1%), followed by hotel establishments with 50.7% and local accommodation establishments with 44.5%.

In the month of reference, there was an estimated total of 126.1 thousand overnight stays in tourist accommodation in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, representing a very significant increase of 3,014.9% compared to the same month of the previous year (a month in which the guests flow was very small, due to restrictive measures implemented under the COVID-19 pandemic). It should be noted that, excluding local accommodation under 10 beds, overnight stays from tourist accommodation increased by 4 434.6% compared to April 2020, more than in the country (+510.8%). Total revenue increased by 5,881.4% while revenue from accommodation grew by 3,916.2%. In the country, total income and income from accommodation registered, in the same order, positive changes of 838.0% and 696.4%. Despite these year-on-year increases in the Region, overnight stays and revenue are at a much lower level than in the pre-pandemic period. In fact, compared to April 2019, total overnight stays in April 2021 decreased by 81.1% and total revenue by 83.5%.

Hotel establishments concentrated 62.7% of overnight stays, growing by 5,448.0% year-on-year. Noteworthy is the fact that in April of the previous year, this segment had only 2% of establishments in operation, generating only 1.4 thousand overnight stays. In turn, local lodging recorded an increase of 1 444.7%, comprising 32.1% of total overnight stays, while rural tourism registered 6.6 thousand overnight stays this month (the establishments in this segment were closed in April 2020).

There were quite significant increases in the main markets when compared to the same period of the previous year. The French market grew by 10 100.0%, followed by the British market (+6 842.2%) and the German market (+2 513.7%). The Portuguese market registered, compared to April 2020, +2 630.5% of overnight stays in April 2021. Year to date (from January to March 2021), the British market continued to register the biggest drop, with -92.2% of overnight stays, followed by the German and French markets, with a decrease of 74.6% and 73.4%, respectively.  For the same period, the Portuguese market showed a less pronounced drop (-21.9%), compared to the same period last year.

Considering the January to April period, overnight stays decreased by 73.3% year-on-year, while total revenue and lodging revenue declined by 75.8% and 76.9%, respectively.

The bed occupancy rate in the reference month reached 19.1%, growing by 11.2 percentage points over the same month of the previous year. In turn, the room occupancy rate reached 21.6%.

In April 2021, the average income per room (RevPAR) was 13.88 euros, +111.2% compared to the same month of the previous year and +54.6% vis-a-vis the previous month. RevPar continues to register significantly low values compared to 2019 (-69.7% than in April 2019).
