In the academic year 2022/2023
Enrolment numbers from Pre-School to Secondary Education decreased by 2.0% compared to the previous academic year
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) has released the updated “Time Series of Education in the Autonomous Region of Madeira” with information on non-higher education for the academic year 2022/2023. The data was provided by the Observatory of Education of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (OERAM), a core unit of the Regional Directorate of School Administration (DRAE) of the Regional Secretariat of Education, Science, and Technology.
The following points are highlighted:
- The number of educational establishments decreased in the last academic year from Pre-School to the Lower Secondary Education, remaining the same as the previous academic year in Secondary Education.
- The number of enrolled students from Pre-School to Secondary Education decreased by 2.0% compared to the previous academic year, reaching 38.9 thousand, the lowest since the series began in 1999/2000.
- Public education accounted for 78.2% of enrolments, while private education accounted for 21.8%.
- Over the last decade, there was a decrease of: 10.7% in the number of children enrolled in Pre-School, 28.2% in the number of students enrolled in the 1st cycle of Primary Education, 34.9% in the 2nd cycle, 27.1% in the Lower Secondary and 7.7% in Secondary Education.
- The number of persons aged 18 and over participating in adult-oriented courses decreased by 22.9% between 2012/2013 and 2022/2023. Specifically, the number of adults participating in Adult Education and Training courses halved (a decrease of 51.2%), and those in processes of Recognition, Validation, and Certification of Competences (RVCC) decreased by 74.0%.
- The transition/completion rate of Secondary Education reached the highest value of the series (90.2%) in 2022/2023. In Primary Education, this rate was 97.0%, the lowest in the last four academic years.
- In the academic year 2022/2023, there were 5,813 teachers in service, 48 fewer than in the previous academic year.
- Only in Pre-School Education and Professional Schools did the proportion of teachers under 40 years of age exceed the proportion of teachers aged 60 or over.
- Of the total teachers, 5,177 belonged to public schools, with 90.8% integrated into the staff. Compared to 2013/2014, there was an 11.5% decrease in non-higher education teaching staff.
- Non-teaching staff numbered 3,859, an increase of 0.7% from the previous academic year and 1.0% from 2017/2018.
