Retention and desistance rate at basic education decreased while the success rate at secondary education increased

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases an update of the time series on Education, by including data from the school year 2018/2019. This information is provided by the Education System Observatory of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (OERAM). 

This year DREM will also release data from the Ministry of Education and Science - Directorate-General for Education and Science Statistics (DGEEC) regarding students of the Autonomous Region of Madeira enrolled in higher education in Portugal, by NUTS2 region of the establishment.

Concerning pre-primary education, in the school year 2018/2019 there were 120 institutions (down by 5 from the previous school year). The number of kindergarten teachers in preschool education stood at 766 (750 in 2017/2018), while the number of children enrolled at this level was 5.7 thousand (5.6 thousand in 2017/2018). This indicator increased for the first time since school year 2010/2011.

The number of students enrolled in basic education (25.9 thousand) decreased in all three basic levels of education: -3.7% in the 1st cycle,  -0.9% in the 2nd cycle and -4.2% in the 3rd cycle. This is the lowest number of students for basic education since the beginning of the series (1999/2000).

The number of students enrolled at secondary education increased by 3.2% to 11.1 thousand students.

5.8 thousand teachers worked in pre-primary education, basic education and secondary educational institutions, down by 4.3% from 2017/2018 (6.0 thousand teachers).

The retention and desistence rate at basic education stood at 3.9%, down by 1.9 percentage points (p.p.) over the previous school year. The success rate at secondary education was 85.0%, increasing by 1.4 p.p. from 2017/2018.

Concerning tertiary education, the number of students enrolled at this level of education in 2018/2019 in the eight institutions providing tertiary education (six public and two private) was 3.2 thousand, up by 30 students over the previous school year. The teaching staff also rose to 386 (349 in 2018/2019).

In 2018/2019 there were over 4,500 Madeirans studying in the Mainland in tertiary education

According to data now released by DGEEC, in the academic year 2018/2019, 7.5 thousand students resident in the Autonomous Region of Madeira were enrolled in higher education institutions in Portugal. Since the 1st year of the series (2015/2016), this indicator has maintained an increasing trend, at an average of 1.6% per year.

Of the 7.5 thousand aforementioned students, 39.4% studied in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, 30.9% in the Metropolitan Area of ​​Lisbon, 13.6% in Norte, 11.9% in Centro, 2.6 % in Alentejo, 1.2% in the Algarve and only 0.4% in the Autonomous Region of the Azores.

By type of course / study cycle, in 2018/2019, it is possible to verify that 61.3% of students were enrolled in graduate programmes, 17.1% in integrated master's, 13.7% in master's, 3.6% in higher technical education and 2.6% in doctoral programmes. Of the total of these students, 88.7% were enrolled in public education and 11.3% in private education.
