In the 4th quarter of 2025

Number of bankruptcy, insolvency and enterprise recovery cases filed in the first-instance courts of the Madeira District increased both on a quarterly and year-on-year basis

According to information provided by the Directorate-General for Justice Policy (DGPJ), the number of incoming cases filed in the Madeira District related to bankruptcy, insolvency and enterprise recovery increased from 44 in the 3rd quarter of 2025 to 57 cases in the 4th quarter of 2025 (+29.5%). Compared to the same quarter of the previous year (54 cases), a rise of 5.6% was observed.

In the 4th quarter of 2025, a total of 55 cases were closed (-8.3% compared to the 4th quarter of 2024), of which 49 (89.1%) ended in declared bankruptcy or insolvency. This number of declared bankruptcies/insolvencies was higher than that recorded in the previous quarter (36), but lower than in the same quarter of the previous year (54).

Regarding the type of persons involved in the declared bankruptcies/insolvencies, the proportion of natural persons in the total number of cases exceeded that of legal persons, representing 71.4% of the total. Of the 49 bankruptcies/insolvencies declared in this quarter, 35 involved natural persons and 14 legal persons.

Annual number of incoming cases in 2025 grew compared to the previous year

The annual data indicates that, in 2025, incoming (201) and closed (185) bankruptcy, insolvency and enterprise recovery cases showed positive trends compared to 2024, with changes of +14.9% and +4.5%, respectively. As can be seen, the number of closed cases was lower than the number of incoming cases, which resulted in an increase of 72.7% in pending cases.

Regarding declared bankruptcies/insolvencies, an increase was observed between 2024 and 2025, from 162 to 167, corresponding to a rise of 3.1%. In terms of the type of persons involved in the declared bankruptcies/insolvencies, in 2025, the proportion of natural persons in the total number of cases (79.0%) exceeded that of legal persons (21.0%).

As regards the value range of cases with declared bankruptcy/insolvency, the "Between 5 000 euros and 9 999 euros" bracket accounted for the largest proportion of the total (34.7%), followed by the "Up to 4 999 euros" bracket at 29.9%. The other two brackets, "Between 10 000 euros and 49 999 euros" and "50 000 euros or more", were the least representative, collectively accounting for 35.3% of the total cases in reference.
