In 2017

Crime rate in the Autonomous Region of Madeira increased, although remaining below the country’s value

In 2017, the number of offences recorded by the police forces stood at 6.5 thousand, representing a increase of 6.7% over the previous year (6.1 thousand).

The most common offences were “against persons” and “against patrimony” (in aggregate represented 74.4% of the total offences), which rose by 0.2% and by 18.9%, respectively, compared to 2016.

In 2017, the crime rate – the ratio of  the number of offences by the resident population (in thousands) – stood at 25.4‰, above the 2016 figure (23.8‰). However, that rate is significantly lower compared to the country’s average (33,2‰) and to the Autonomous Region of the Azores (38,0‰). In the Autonomous Region of Madeira, the highest rates were registered in “crimes against the patrimony” (9.0‰) and in “crimes of assault” (6.9‰).

Regarding the number of public deeds, 5.1 thousand deeds were registered in 2017, up by 13.7% from the previous year (4.5 thousand).
