Number of deaths decreased by 2.3% compared to the same month of the previous year, whilst the number of live births increased by 22.0%

In January 2026, 292 deaths were registered in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), a value lower than that observed in January 2025 (7 fewer deaths; -2.3%).

The assessment of "excess mortality", which compares the deaths recorded in the reference month (292 deaths) with the average values for the same month in the years 2016 to 2019 (264 deaths, on average), shows that there was an excess mortality of 10.6%, reflecting the fact that, across those years, the number of deaths was always below the value recorded in January 2026.

In January 2026, no deaths of infants aged under one year or stillbirths were registered.

Also in January 2026, 155 live births were recorded, corresponding to an increase of 22.0% compared to the same month of 2025 (28 more births).

The difference between live births and deaths resulted in a negative natural balance of 137 persons in January 2026, less unfavourable than in the same month of the previous year, in which it recorded a value of -172.

In the first month of 2026, 65 marriages were celebrated, corresponding to an increase of 1.6% compared to the number of marriages registered in January 2025 (1 more marriage).
