Number of deaths increased by 6.0% year-on-year, while the number of live births increased by 8.4%
In July 2026, 247 deaths were registered in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), a figure higher than that recorded in July 2025 (14 more deaths; +6.0%). From January to July, 1 688 deaths were recorded, 24 fewer year-on-year (−1.4%).
The assessment of "excess mortality", which compares the deaths recorded in the reference month (247 deaths) with the average for the same month over the years 2016 to 2019 (189 deaths, on average), shows an excess mortality of 30.5%, reflecting the fact that, across those years, the number of deaths was always lower than the figure recorded in July 2026.
In July 2026, 1 death of an infant under 1 year of age and 1 stillbirth were registered.
Also in July 2026, 155 live births were recorded, representing a year-on-year increase of 8.4% (12 additional births). The total number of live births registered in the first seven months of 2026 (1 023) was 9.1% higher than that recorded in the same period of 2025 (85 additional live births).
The difference between live births and deaths resulted in a negative natural balance of 92 persons in July 2026, a more adverse outcome than year-on-year, when the figure stood at −90. In the first seven months of 2026, the cumulative natural balance stood at -665, representing an improvement compared to the same period of 2025 (-774).
In the seventh month of 2026, 134 marriages were celebrated, representing a year-on-year decrease of 8.2% (12 fewer marriages). From January to July, 632 marriages were celebrated, 40 fewer year-on-year (-6.0%).
