Number of divorces increased compared to the previous year
Provisional data on dissolved marriages by divorce indicate that, in 2025, 478 divorces were decreed for couples whose family residence was in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, 24 more than in 2024. This corresponds to a crude divorce rate of 1.8‰ (compared to 1.7‰ in 2024).
Porto Santo and Machico recorded the lowest divorce rates in the Region (1.5‰), while Santa Cruz recorded the highest rate, with 2.1 divorces per thousand inhabitants.
The vast majority of divorces were between opposite-sex couples. There were 4 divorces between male same-sex couples and 3 between female same-sex couples.
In 2025, 65.3% of the decreed divorces were “by mutual consent.” The remaining 34.7% resulted from divorces declared “without the consent of one of the spouses”.
The average age at the time of divorce was 49.1 years for men and 46.6 years for women (48.9 years and 46.2 years in 2024, respectively).
Regarding the length of the marriage, 71.5% of the divorces decreed in 2025 involved unions that had lasted 10 or more years (342 divorces), while 28.5% stemmed from marriages lasting less than 10 years (136 divorces). It is worth noting that 42.9% of the divorces decreed were from marriages lasting 20 years or more (205 divorces), with a particular focus on the 20-29 years group (123 divorces; 25.7%). Additionally, 17.2% of divorces resulted from marriages lasting 30 years or more (82 divorces).
