DREM releases Environmental Statistics

Data gathered by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira for the year 2016 show that the distributed water through the public water system stood at 26.1 million cubic metres, a 2.7% increase from 2015. 57.1% of that total was for household consumption (56.5% in 2015).

In 2016, the global production of solid waste in the Autonomous Region of Madeira was 190.2 thousand tonnes, up by 20.9 thousand tonnes over the previous year. This increase is related to the deposition of inert material which grew from 12.4 to 32.7 thousand tonnes between 2015 and 2016.

The waste deposited in the solid waste treatment plant of Meia Serra (130.6 thousand tonnes) decreased by 0.5% compared to 2015, while the waste destined for recycling/valorisation outside the Region stood at 24.3 thousand tonnes (up by 3.4%).

The consolidated expenditure of the Regional Government of Madeira in environmental management and protection was 36.8 million euros, 75.1% of which destined to “Protection and remediation of soil, groundwater and surface water” (56.6% in 2015).

In 2016, the 683 firemen of the 10 fire brigades located in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, carried out 38,556 services (up by 5.7% from 2015), 76.0% of which were related to health/prehospital situations.

Compared to 2015, there was more rainfall in both Funchal (647 mm in 2016 and 300 mm in 2015) and Porto Santo (498 mm in 2016 and 306 mm in 2015). In Funchal, the average maximum temperature was 23.0ºC (22.8ºC in 2015). The average minimum temperature increased from 17.2ºC in 2015 to 17.4ºC in 2016.

Information regarding the air quality index for Funchal shows that in 2016, 98.4% of the observations were rated good or very good while only 0.8% were negative.

In the reference year, 54 forest fires were registered, which consumed an area of 6,270 hectares, 4,004 of which of wooded area.


DREM releases Time Series on Environmental Statistics for the 1989-2016 period  

DREM also releases today on its website, the Time Series on Environmental Statistics, updated with the data for 2016.

The series contains data about water supply, water treatment and drainage, solid waste, expenditures of the regional and local scope entities in environmental management and protection by economic aggregate and domain, data on air quality, quality of water for human consumption, weather, forestry fires, firemen, namely blue flag beaches, quality of bathing waters, information on the nature and environment protection service and defense actions against forest fires.
