In the 4th quarter of 2016

Defaulted loans of household and non-financial corporations dropped from the previous quarter. Bank deposits of private individuals also declined

According to the data released by the Bank of Portugal, at the end of the 4th quarter of 2016, the balance of credit granted to non-financial corporations located in the Autonomous Region of Madeira stood at  €1.914 billion. The drop in the amount of defaulted loans by €36 million to a total of €372 million, led to a decrease of the default ratio of this type of corporations to 19.4%, although remaining 3.7 percentage points (p.p.) above national average.

In the household sector, the balance of credit granted in the end of the reference period amounted to €2.985 billion, with the default ratio on bank loans to households decreasing to 5.9% (down by 0.3 p.p. from the previous quarter). In Portugal, the value of this ratio was 4.9%. The defaulted loans of the households residing in the Autonomous Region of Madeira stood at €176 million, a €12 million drop from last September.

Deposits and deposit like instruments in the local bank establishments of private individuals (including emigrants) reached a total of €3.6 billion at the end of the 4th quarter 2016, dropping by €25 and €5 million euros from the previous and year-ago quarters, respectively.
