DREM publishes transport statistics for the year 2022
Land transport – Increase in the main indicators compared to 2021
According to data compiled by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM), the collective transport of passengers by bus recorded, in the 4th quarter of 2022, a total of 6.5 million passengers, with urban lines accounting for the transport of about 4.1 million passengers and interurban lines for 2.4 million passengers. In 2022, urban lines carried 15.5 million passengers, +22.2% compared to 2021 and -10.0% compared to 2019. In intercity lines, 9.1 million passengers were transported, reflecting a growth of 18.5% compared to the previous year and a positive change of 14.0% compared to 2019. In aggregate terms (i.e., adding urban and intercity), passengers transported grew by 20.8% compared to 2021 and decreased by 2.4% compared to 2019.
In 2022, 1.1 million tickets were sold by the cableways installed in the Region (+110.5% than in 2021; +13.9% compared to 2019), of which 92.9% were for adults, 4.8% for children and the remaining 2.3% for other users (e.g. farmers, residents, students, etc...). In the same period, total revenue was approximately 12.8 million euros, a 147.8% growth when compared to 2021 (+20.6% compared to 2019). It should be noted that in the 4th quarter of 2022, the number of tickets sold grew by 43.4% compared to the same period in 2021 (+29.2% compared to 2019). Revenue reached 3.3 million euros, an increase of 57.9% compared to the same quarter of 2021 (+33.4% vis-avis the same quarter of 2019).
Moreover, the Registers of the Region recorded, in the 4th quarter of 2022, the transfer of ownership of 3.4 thousand used vehicles, 85.4% of which were passenger cars and 11.5% were cargo vehicles. There were also 102 registries of heavy vehicles, about 3.0% of the total. Compared to the year-ago period, the number of registrations of used cars increased by 233, an annual increase of 7.5% (-3.5% compared to the same period in 2019). In 2022, 14.0 thousand transfers of ownership of used motor vehicle registrations were carried out, resulting in a year-on-year change of +28.8% change compared to 2021 and +2.7% compared to 2019.
According to the information collected by ACAP - Associação Automóvel de Portugal from the Institute of Registers and Notary, in 2022, a total of 5.3 thousand new vehicles were purchased by residents of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (+14.0%). In the 4th quarter of 2022, 1.3 thousand vehicles were counted, which compared to the 4th quarter of 2021, representing an increase of 151 vehicles (+13.6%).
Provisional data provided by the Madeira Regional Command of the Public Security Police (PSP) show that, in 2022, 3,118 traffic accidents were recorded with police intervention, and the number of victims was 1,079, up by 9 over the same period in 2021 (-146 when compared to the same period of 2019), which means an increase of 0.8% (a drop of 11.9% compared to 2019). Of that total number of victims, 995 were counted as light injuries, 69 as serious injuries and 15 as fatalities.
Air transport – Passenger movement at the Autonomous Region of Madeira airports grew compared to 2021, surpassing 2019 figures
In the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) airports, in the 4th quarter of 2022, the movement of passengers reached 1.0 million persons, representing a year-on-year change of +43.9%. Compared to the same quarter of 2019, there was an increase of 37.2%. In the two airports of the ARM, there was a rise in passenger movement, with Madeira and Porto Santo recording annual changes of +43.7% and +48.8%, respectively. When compared to the same period of 2019, the Madeira airport grew by 36.1% and Porto Santo far exceeded the 2019 figures (+73.0%). In 2022, the movement of passengers at the ARM airports stood at approximately 4.1 million, an increase of 102.1% over 2021 while vis-à-vis 2019 the growth was of 21.5%.
Regarding air cargo, in the 4th quarter of 2022, there was a positive year-on-year change in unloaded goods (+6.2%) and negative in loaded goods (-36.3%). Compared to the same quarter of 2019, there was an increase in unloaded goods (+9.3%) and a decrease in loaded goods (-44.6%). The overall total of 2022 shows a similar trend when compared to 2021 (+14.0% in unloaded goods and -15.1% in loaded goods) and when compared to 2019 (+4.5% in unloaded goods and -29.3% in loaded goods).
Maritime transport - Number of cruise ships entering the Ports of the ARM was higher than in 2021 and 2019; Passengers in the Madeira-Porto Santo Line recovered, without reaching the 2019 figures
In the field of maritime transport, in 2022, 323 cruise ships entered the ports of Madeira, the majority in the first (95 stopovers) and fourth quarters (130 stopovers). When compared to 2021, the number of cruise ships went up by 198, but only by 25 cruise ships when compared to 2019. The number of passengers in transit also increased, reaching 410,283 passengers, wich represents a year-on-year increase of 260.5% (-30.3% than in 2019).
In 2022, the Port of Funchal received 406,419 passengers in transit, the vast majority (88.0%) Europeans. The main nationalities were British (42.8% of the total, -8.7% compared to 2019), German (34.7% of the total, -40.6% compared to 2019), and Italian (a share of 2.7%, -44.4% compared to 2021). It should also be noted that this year 31,706 American passengers were in transit in the Port of Funchal (7.7% of the total, -7.5% compared to 2019).
In the 4th quarter of this year, the number of passengers on the Madeira-Porto Santo line increased by 17.5% vis-a-vis 2021, surpassing 2019 (+15.1%). The overall total of the number of passengers transported in 2022 was 339.8 thousand, which represents a higher value than in the previous year (+32.2%; -6.4% compared to 2019).
Regarding the movement of goods in Madeira’s ports, in the reference quarter, there was a year-on-year drop (-0.9% compared to the same period of 2021; +3.7% compared to 2019). The year-on-year decrease observed in the loading (-7.6%; -6.8%) of goods contributed to this change, as the unloading remained unchanged year-on-year (+5.2% compared to the same quarter of 2019). In annual terms, the change between 2022 and 2021 was positive (+12.7%) across unloaded (+13.9%) and loaded (+4.5%) goods, but when compared to 2019 the change was lower (+9.4% in the total movement of goods, +10.4% in the unloaded goods and +2.3% of the loaded goods).
In 2022, 2.4 thousand recreational vessels entered the marinas of the Region, representing a 19.4% growth when compared to the previous year (+19.1% compared to 2019). These vessels had 5.1 thousand crew members and passengers, +16.6% than last year (-8.1% compared to 2019). In the 4th quarter of 2022, there was a year-on-year decrease in vessels (-9.2%), as well as in crew members and passengers (-14.3%). Compared to the same period of 2019 there was an increase in both the number of vessels (+34.2%), as well as in the number of crew members and passengers (+15.6%).
