Movement of passengers at the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira was 39.2% above the same month of 2019

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today, based on information provided by ANA-Aeroportos de Portugal, the first data on air transport in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) for the month of January 2023.

In the month in reference, there was a movement of 323.3 thousand passengers at the airports of the ARM, transported in 2,593 aircraft (commercial flights), which represents year-on-year changes of 83.3% and 43.7%, respectively. When compared to January 2019 (pre-pandemic month), there was also a growth, of 39.2% in the movement of passengers and 24.5% in the movement of aircrafts.

Each aircraft (considering jointly those that have landed and taken off) carried, on average, about 128.6 passengers (102.3 in January 2022) at Madeira airport, while in Porto Santo that figure did not exceed 62.8 passengers (49.9 in the same month last year).

In January 2023, domestic and international passengers’ movement at Madeira airports registered positive year-on-year changes, with international traffic growing more (+83.9%) than domestic traffic (+82.6%). Compared to the same period before the pandemic (January 2019), domestic traffic grew by 48.8% and international traffic by 31.5%.

At Madeira airport, and in the month under review, international traffic (53.6% of the total) concentrated more passengers than domestic traffic. At Porto Santo Airport, domestic traffic was for more relevant, with a share even higher in the winter season (87.8% of the total).

In this reference month, scheduled flights at Madeira airports accounted for 93.3% of all aircraft movements and 94.8% of passengers (86.4% and 89.3% in the same period last year, respectively).

In January 2023, the occupancy rate of aircraft handled at the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira was 73.4%, with Madeira Airport reaching 73.6% and Porto Santo, 66.6%. In the same period last year, the occupancy rate was lower, standing at 63.2%, 63.3% and 59.8%, in the same order.

From January to January of 2023, passengers embarked and disembarked at Madeira airports reached 322.9 thousand, half regarding traffic exclusively between airports located in the national territory, which includes inland and domestic connections (47.7% of the total as a whole) and the other half international (52.3%). In the latter, the United Kingdom was the main country of origin and destination of international flights from airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (38.0%), followed by Germany (21.0%) and France (6.0%).
