Weighted Annual Average Daily Traffic on the freeway VR1 increased by 13.9% when compared to the previous year

The Regional Directorate of Statistics (DREM) releases once more information on the traffic of the main regional roads of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM). This release introduced a new indicator - Weighted Annual Average Daily Traffic - corresponding to the number of vehicles, which, on average, travel every day along the length of each road.

The data released are based on information provided by the Regional Directorate of Roads (DRE), taken from the traffic registration and control terminals, located on the roads and on their premises.

In the year 2022, road traffic increased by 13.7% on Via Rápida (freeway VR1) and by 15.3% on Vias Expresso year-on-year. When compared to 2019, the growth was slightly lower, of 7.1% and 10.9%, respectively,  On the roads under concession, the aforementioned increase was driven by light traffic (+13.8% on the Via Rápida; +15.3% on the Vias Expresso). In heavy traffic, the change was also positive, albeit lower, both on the Via Rápida (+10.3%) and on the Vias Expresso (+13.9%).

It should be noted that in the Weighted Annual Average Daily Traffic, there were, in average terms, 32.9 thousand vehicles on the Via Rápida and 6.0 thousand vehicles on the Vias Expresso, representing an increase of +13.9% and 16.5%, by the same order. The rise in light vehicle traffic (+14.0% on the Via Rápida; +16.6% on the Vias Expressso) had a major impact. Due to the small share of heavy vehicle traffic (2.4% and 8.4% of the total, respectively), the large increase over 2021 (+10.1% on the Via Rápida; 14.5% on the Vias Expresso) had a minor impact on the evolution of the indicator as a whole.
