Movement of passengers at the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira stood 49.7% above the same month of 2019

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today, according to information provided by ANA-Aeroportos de Portugal, the first data on air transport in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) for the month of February 2023.

In the month in reference, there was a movement of 333.1 thousand passengers at the airports of the ARM, transported in 2,435 aircraft (commercial flights), which represents year-on-year changes of 78.3% and 54.4%, respectively. When compared to February 2019 (pre-pandemic month), there was also a growth, of 49.7% in the movement of passengers and 32.8% in the movement of aircraft.

In the first two months of 2023, the changes in aircraft and passenger movements were 48.7% and 80.7%, respectively.

In February 2023, each aircraft (considering jointly those that have landed and taken off) carried, on average, about 143 passengers (126 in February 2022) at Madeira airport, while in Porto Santo that figure exceed 61 passengers (50 in the same month last year).

In February 2023, domestic and international passengers’ movement at Madeira airports registered positive year-on-year changes, with international traffic growing more (+81.5%) than domestic traffic (+74.8%). Compared to the same period before the pandemic (February 2019), domestic traffic grew by 64.4% and international traffic by 38.9%.

At Madeira airport, and in the month under review, international traffic (54.0% of the total) concentrated more passengers than domestic traffic (46.0%). At Porto Santo Airport, domestic traffic was more relevant (65.9% of the total), exceeding that of international traffic (34.1%).

In this reference month, scheduled flights at Madeira airports accounted for 93.0% of all aircraft movements and 95.0% of passengers (89.0% and 91.4% in the same period last year, respectively).

In February 2023, the occupancy rate of aircraft handled at the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira was 80.6%, with Madeira Airport reaching 81.4% and Porto Santo, 65.2%. In the same period last year, the occupancy rate was lower, standing at 75.2%, 76.1% and 60.1%, in the same order.

From January to February of 2023, passengers embarked and disembarked at Madeira airports reached 653.2 thousand, half regarding traffic exclusively between airports located in the national territory, which includes inland and domestic connections (47.3% of the total as a whole) and the other half international (52.7%). In the latter, the United Kingdom was the main country of origin and destination of international flights from airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (37.4%), followed by Germany (20.8%) and France (7.0%).
