In April 2023, the passenger movement in the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira increased by 12.7% compared to the same period last year and was 41.7% higher than the same month in 2019
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) has released today data on air transport in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) for the month of April 2023, based on information provided by ANA - Airports of Portugal.
During the reference month, the airports in the ARM recorded a total of 423.4 thousand passengers transported by 2,846 commercial aircraft, resulting in year-on-year changes of 12.7% and 5.6%, respectively. When compared to April 2019 (pre-pandemic period), there was also growth of 41.7% in passenger movement and 26.8% in aircraft movement.
Considering the year-to-date data for the year 2023 (January to April), the changes in aircraft and passenger movement were also positive, with increases of 31.4% and 47.0% respectively.
On average, each aircraft (including both landings and take-offs) carried approximately 155 passengers at Madeira Airport, compared to 146 in April 2022. At Porto Santo Airport, the average number of passengers per aircraft was 81, compared to 63 in the same month last year.
In April 2023, both domestic and international passenger traffic in the airports of the ARM showed positive year-on-year changes, with domestic traffic growing more (+13.5%) than international traffic (+11.8%). Compared to the same period before the pandemic (2019), domestic traffic increased by 50.9% and international traffic by 34.2%.
At Madeira Airport, international traffic accounted for 53.5% of the total, while domestic traffic represented 46.5%. At Porto Santo Airport, there was a predominance of domestic traffic, accounting for 80.3% of the total, but with a larger disproportion compared to the previous month.
In the reference month, regular flights accounted for 92.1% of the total aircraft movements and 94.2% of the passengers (compared to 90.6% and 92.4% in the same period last year, respectively).
In April 2023, the average occupancy rate of the aircraft in the airports of the ARM was around 87.8%, with Madeira Airport reaching 88.9% and Porto Santo Airport at 72.0%. In the same period last year, the occupancy rate was lower, at 82.7%, 83.5%, and 67.7%, respectively.
In the first four months of 2023, the total number of passengers embarked and disembarked at the airports of the ARM amounted to 1,466.1 thousand, with half of them corresponding to traffic exclusively between airports located within the national territory, including domestic and internal connections (47.3% of the total), and the other half corresponding to international traffic (52.7%). In the context of international traffic, the United Kingdom was the main country of origin and destination for international flights from the airports of the ARM (34.9%), followed by Germany (21.5%) and France (7.9%).
