Passenger traffic at the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) experienced a growth of 10.6% compared to the same month in the previous year

According to the data provided to the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) by ANA - Aeroportos de Portugal, during September 2023, there were a total of 444.3 thousand passengers transported across 3,068 commercial flights within the airports of the ARM. These figures represent year-over-year changes of +10.6% and +5.5%, respectively. When compared to September 2019, in the pre-pandemic period, there was a substantial growth in passenger traffic by 43.7% and aircraft movements by 34.1%.

For the first nine months of 2023, there were changes in aircraft movements and passenger numbers of +13.7% and +21.1%, respectively. On average, each aircraft (considering both arrivals and departures) carried approximately 150 passengers at Madeira Airport, an increase from the 143 passengers in September 2022. The Porto Santo Airport reported nearly 100 passengers on average (97 in the same month of the previous year).

In September 2023, there was a positive year-over-year change in international air traffic (+15.7%) and a slightly smaller increase in domestic air traffic (+5.5%) at the airports of the ARM. Compared to the same period in 2019, both international and domestic segments experienced growth, with international traffic rising by 45.4% and domestic traffic by 41.8%.

At Madeira Airport, international traffic accounted for 54.2% of the total, while domestic traffic comprised 45.8%. In contrast, at Porto Santo Airport, domestic traffic dominated, representing 81.8% of the total, albeit with a less significant disparity compared to the previous month.

In the reference month, regular scheduled flights at the airports of the ARM constituted 90.4% of all aircraft movements and 92.1% of passengers, demonstrating a slight decrease compared to the same period in the previous year when these figures were 92.4% and 93.7%, respectively.

During September 2023, the average aircraft occupancy rate at the airports of the ARM was approximately 86.8%, with Madeira Airport reaching 87.8% and Porto Santo Airport at 75.8%. These figures represented an increase from the same period in the previous year when the occupancy rates were 83.1%, 84.0%, and 72.2%, respectively.

From January to September 2023, the total number of passengers arriving and departing from the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira reached 3,692.3 thousand. Approximately half of this total corresponded to traffic exclusively between airports within the national territory, including both domestic and internal connections, accounting for 47.9% of the total. The other half was attributed to international traffic, representing 52.1% of the total. Regarding international traffic, the United Kingdom was the primary country of origin and destination for international flights at the airports of the ARM, accounting for 32.7%, followed by Germany (19.9%) and France (9.0%).
