The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) released today first data concerning air transport in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) for March 2024, based on information sourced from ANA - Aeroportos de Portugal. During the referenced month, the airports in the ARM recorded a passenger movement of 414,500, transported by 2,779 aircraft (commercial flights), reflecting year-on-year changes of +5.7% and -0.5%, respectively.
In the first three months of 2024, the changes in aircraft movements and passenger movements were -4.6% and +2.1%, respectively. It should be noted that these figures may be influenced by seasonal changes, as Easter occurred in March, in 2024, whereas it was celebrated in April, in 2023.
In March 2024, each aircraft (considering both arrivals and departures) carried, on average, about 155 passengers (146 in March 2023) at Madeira Airport, while at Porto Santo Airport, this number reached nearly 72 passengers (59 in the corresponding month).

In the month under review, both domestic and international passenger movements at the ARM airports recorded positive year-on-year changes, with international traffic increasing by 3.1% and domestic traffic by 8.8%. At Madeira Airport, international traffic (52.6% of the total) predominated over domestic (47.4% of the total). At Porto Santo Airport, there was a predominance of domestic traffic (58.6% of the total), albeit with a lesser disproportion compared to February 2024.
During this reference month, scheduled flights at the ARM airports accounted for 91.4% of the total aircraft movements and 93.6% of the passengers (93.9% and 95.5% in the corresponding period, respectively).
In March 2024, the occupancy rates of the aircraft at the ARM airports were around 87.9%, with Madeira Airport reaching 88.5% and Porto Santo Airport at 72.9%. In the same period of the previous year, the occupancy rates were lower, at 82.6%, 83.4%, and 60.9%, in the same order.
From January to March 2024, the number of passengers embarked and disembarked (excluding those in transit) at the ARM airports amounted to 1,066,900, with half corresponding to traffic exclusively between airports located within national territory, including internal and domestic connections (47.9% of the total) and the other half to international traffic (52.1%). Within this latter category, the United Kingdom was the main country of origin and destination for international flights at the ARM airports (31.1%), followed by Germany (20.9%) and France (5.0%).

During the IATA Winter season, from October 29, 2023, to March 23, 2024, Madeira Airport operated commercial flights from 28 airlines (30 in the IATA Winter 22/23), covering 62 routes (58 in the corresponding period) to 56 destinations (53 in the IATA Winter 22/23).
