Passenger movement at the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira exceeded 5 million, for the first time
According to information provided by ANA - Airports of Portugal to the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM), in December 2024, the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira recorded a movement of 377.4 thousand passengers, transported on 2 916 commercial flights, representing year-on-year changes of +6.2% and +7.7%, respectively.
Considering the entire year and both airports of the Region, aircraft movement stood at 34 547, while the number of passengers was approximately 5.1 million, representing year-on-year changes of +1.4% and +4.6%, in the same order.
In 2024, Madeira Airport recorded a growth in both aircraft movements (31.8 thousand; +1.9% compared to 2023) and the number of passengers (4.8 million; +4.8%). At Porto Santo Airport, despite a decline in aircraft movement (2.7 thousand; -3.8% compared to 2023), the number of passengers increased (247.9 thousand; +0.4%).
On average, each aircraft (considering both landings and take-offs) transported approximately 151 passengers (147 in 2023) at Madeira Airport, while at Porto Santo Airport, this figure reached 90 passengers (87 in 2023).

Passenger movement at airports in the Autonomous Region of Madeira grew by 7.1% in international traffic (2.7 million) and by 1.8% in the domestic segment (2.3 million).
At Madeira Airport, international traffic (55.2%) exceeded domestic traffic (44.8% of the total). At Porto Santo Airport, domestic traffic remained predominant (78.8% of the total), with a slightly greater disparity compared to 2023 (77.4% of the total).
In 2024, regular flights at ARM airports accounted for 92.1% of the total aircraft movements and 94.2% of passengers (91.8% and 93.5% in 2023, respectively).
The aircraft occupancy rate at ARM airports was around 86.6%, with Madeira Airport reaching 87.1% and Porto Santo Airport 78.4%. In the previous year, the overall occupancy rate was lower (84.4%), as well as at Madeira Airport (85.0%) and Porto Santo Airport (74.5%).
Passengers embarked and disembarked at the ARM airports (not considering transit passengers) reached 5.0 million in 2024, with half corresponding to traffic exclusively between airports located within the national territory, including internal and domestic connections (46.5% of the total), and the other half to international traffic (53.5%). Among international destinations, the United Kingdom was the main country of origin and destination for international flights from the ARM airports (28.7%), followed by Germany (21.2%) and France (8.7%).
