Passenger movement at the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira increased by 17.8% year-on-year
According to information provided by ANA - Aeroportos de Portugal to the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM), in April 2025, the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) recorded a total of 509.2 thousand passengers transported on 3 346 commercial flights, corresponding to year-on-year increases of 17.8% and 16.6%, respectively.
In the reference month, Madeira Airport registered increases both in aircraft movements (3 119; +17.4% compared to April 2024) and in the number of passengers (489.3 thousand; +18.1%). At Porto Santo Airport, there was also an increase in aircraft movements (227; +6.1% year-on-year) and the number of passengers (19.9 thousand; +11.7%). It should be noted that these results may have been slightly influenced by the calendar effect, given that Easter was celebrated in March 2024, whereas in 2025 it occurred in April.
In the first four months of 2025, aircraft movements and passenger traffic recorded increases of +11.0% and +9.9%, respectively.

In April 2025, each aircraft (considering both landings and take-offs) transported, on average, approximately 157 passengers at Madeira Airport (156 in April 2024), while at Porto Santo Airport this figure was approximately 88 passengers (83 in the same period of 2024).
In April 2025, passenger traffic at the ARM airports increased by +24.0% in international traffic (289.4 thousand passengers) and by +10.6% in domestic traffic (219.8 thousand passengers).
At Madeira Airport, international traffic (58.4%) exceeded domestic traffic (41.6% of total traffic), while at Porto Santo Airport, domestic traffic remained predominant (80.9% of total traffic), though the margin narrowed slightly compared to the same period in 2024 (81.1%).
During the reference month, regular flights accounted for 92.5% of total aircraft movements and 94.6% of total passenger traffic at the ARM airports (92.0% and 94.3%, respectively, in April 2024).
In April 2025, the occupancy of aircraft movements at the ARM airports stood at approximately 86.8%, with Madeira Airport reaching 87.3% and Porto Santo Airport at 76.1%. In the same month of the previous year, the load factors were higher overall (88.4%), as well as at Madeira Airport (89.2%), while Porto Santo Airport had a lower rate (73.9%).
From January to April 2025, the number of passengers embarked and disembarked at the ARM airports (excluding passengers in transit) totalled 1 647.5 thousand, of which 43.4% corresponded to domestic traffic (between airports located within national territory, including inter-island connections), and 56.6% to international traffic. Within the scope of international traffic, the United Kingdom was the main country of origin and destination for flights to and from the ARM airports (27.7%), followed by Germany (21.9%) and Poland (11.1%).
