In the first half of 2016

Passenger movement in the airports and in the Madeira-Porto Santo sea line increased year-on-year; movement of goods in the regional seaports decreased slightly

According to the data compiled by DREM, passenger transport by bus decreased by 1.8% in the reference period.  8.5 million passengers were counted  in the urban lines between January and June 2016, down by 2.6% from the corresponding period of 2015,  and 4.0 million in the intercity lines, the same value as in the first half of the previous year.

In the air transport domain, the airports of Madeira and Porto Santo recorded a movement of 1.5 million passengers during the first half of 2016, a 14.9% increase compared to the same period of 2015.

In sea transport, the data from the Ports authority show that the number of cruise ships in the seaports of Autonomous Region of Madeira (152) dropped by four in the first semester of 2016, when compared to the first six months of the previous year. The number of transit passengers also decreased by 0.9%. The seaport of Funchal received a total of 279,829 transit passengers, the majority of them (88.5%) Europeans. Breaking down by the data by nationality, it should be highlighted that the Germans ranked first during the reference period (105,080, year-on-year change rate of +1.0%), followed by the British (104,660; +20.2%) and the Americans (18,352; +12,1%). On the other hand, the passenger movement in the Madeira – Porto Santo sea line went up by 31.1% year-on-year.

Regarding the movement of goods in the seaport of Autonomous Region of Madeira, the figures for the first six months of 2016 show a 0.6% drop for the unloaded goods and a 2.3% increase for loaded goods, if compared with the corresponding period of 2015.

Vehicle sale registries made by the Vehicle Registration Offices of Madeira in the first half of 2016 dropped by 1.1% year-on-year

In the first half of 2016, the Vehicle Registration Offices of Madeira registered the sale of 6,194 vehicles (new and used), 83.4% of which were light passenger vehicles and 15.3% light cargo vehicles. The sale of  79 heavy vehicles (1.3% of the total) was also registered during this period. The number of registries dropped by 66 compared to the same period of 2015 (-1.1%).
