DREM releases Culture indicators for 2019

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today on its website the time series on Culture, Sport and Recreation updated with information for 2019.

Museums with more visitors than in 2018 and art galleries with fewer exhibitions

In 2019, the 18 museums in the Autonomous Region of Madeira which met the eligibility criteria of the Museums Survey displayed 100 thousand goods and had 213 thousand visitors, up by 0.9% from 2018. 53.2% of the visitors were foreign (113 thousand) and 15.0% were integrated in school groups (32 thousand).

Data collected from the art galleries and other temporary exhibition spaces survey show that 261 exhibitions (down by 6.1% from 2018) with 6,752 pieces (8,939 in 2018) took place in the 34 spaces in activity in Madeira.

Periodic publications with a drop in the number of sold copies

In the reference year, 27 periodic publications were counted in Madeira having been sold a total of 3.7 million copies (down by 15.3% from 2018).

Cinemas and live shows with more spectators

In 2019, there were 17,347 cinema exhibitions in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, representing a 0.6% decrease over the previous year. The number of spectators in 2019 went up by 5.2% and stood at approximately 279 thousand, with ticket revenues amounting to 1.4 million euros, a 5.5% increase over the year 2018.

Last year, 1,322 live shows were performed, with a total of 423.4 thousand spectators, of which 71.2 thousand paid for the ticket, generating receipts of 938 thousand euros. Compared to 2018, the number of shows (+11,8%), spectators (+32.3%), tickets sold (+7.3%) and revenue (+28.0%) increased from 2018.

In the botanic gardens and aquariums of Region 715.1 thousand visitors were counted in 2019, the majority of which originating from foreign countries (87.1%). The number of visitors dropped by 0.2% from the previous year.

Local administration expenditures on culture and sport activities and weight in the total expenditure increased

According to the 2019 “Survey on Financing of cultural, recreation and sports activities by the local administration”, the share of expenditure by the local administration of Madeira in cultural and sports activities stood at 6.4% (a 7-year high), having increased by 1.1 percentage points from the previous year. The expenditure in those activities grew by 9.6% to 12.0 million. Of this amount, 73.3% was destined for culture and 26.7% for sport.
