Number of sessions and spectators and also the revenue decreased in the cinemas of the Autonomous Region of Madeira
According to the provisional data made available by the Institute for Cinema and Audiovisuals (ICA), there were recorded 2 061 film sessions in the cinemas of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, in the first half of 2021, representing a 37.9% decrease compared to the same period in 2020.
The number of spectators stood at 18 021, down by 56.9% year-on-year, while the box office revenue fell to 96.1 thousand euros, a 55.6% decrease compared to the same period of 2020.
For public health reasons - Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic - on 18th March 2020, a state of emergency was declared in Portugal, through the Decree of the President of the Republic no. 14-A / 2020, of 18 March, regulated by Decree no. 2-A / 2020. The resulting restrictions had an impact on the lives of citizens, including mobility and social contacts. The statistical data regarding cinema registered from March 2020 should be read in this context, being that in the 2nd quarter of 2020 and in the months of February and March 2021, the cinemas in the Autonomous Region of Madeira were closed.
