DREM releases provisional data on cinema for the 1st quarter of 2022 as well as the final results, for 2021, for cinema exhibition, cultural real estate and botanical gardens and aquariums
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today provisional data made available by the Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual (ICA) for the 1st quarter of 2022. In addition, an enlargement of the time series of Culture, Sports and Leisure Statistics is available with new indicators for museums and entertainment precincts. Also released for 2021 are the final data on cinema, data on cultural property made available by the Regional Directorate of Culture and the results of the Survey on Zoological Gardens, Botanical Gardens and Aquariums.
Number of sessions, spectators and receipts increased in the cinemas of the Autonomous Region of Madeira in the 1st quarter of 2022
According to provisional data made available by the Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual (ICA), in the first three months of 2022, there were 2,952 sessions in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), an increase of 1,247.9% compared to the same period in 2021.
The number of spectators reached 27,225, up by 2,652.8% year-on-year, while box office receipts rose to 144 thousand euros, also growing by 2,609.9% over the same period of the previous year.
It should be recalled that following the COVID-19 pandemic containment measures, cinemas in the Region closed during February and March 2021, which was undoubtedly reflected in the above changes for the quarter. Comparing the 1st quarter of 2020 (in which the pandemic only affected the second half of March) there is a drop of 11.1% in sessions, 35.0% in spectators and 33.6% in receipts.

In 2021, the number of spectators increased by 40.7% in the Region's cinemas
In 2021, according to the final data made available by the Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual (ICA), 8,783 sessions were recorded in the 14 screens of the 3 cinema precincts in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), which represented a 14.3% increase over 2020. The number of spectators also went up in 2021, to 99,252, i.e., +40.7% compared to 2020. In turn, box office receipts, in 2021, rose to 525.7 thousand euros, growing by 43.1% compared to the previous year. In the 3rd quarter of 2021, it was recorded the highest number of sessions (41.6%) with 41.1% of spectators and 40.6% of box office receipts for the year. The changes in the regional government measures taken as part of the containment of the COVID-19 pandemic, regarding the closure of cinemas in February and March 2021, meant that the 1st quarter was the one that recorded the lowest percentage in these 3 indicators (2.5%, 1.0% and 1.0%, respectively). It should be noted that comparing 2021 to 2019, there are drops of 49.4%, 64.4% and 63.3%, in sessions, spectators and receipts, by the same order.
In 2021, 62.7% of the Region's cultural properties were of municipal interest; 88.4% of visitors to botanical gardens and aquariums were foreigners
According to information made available by the Regional Directorate of Culture, in 2021, 180 cultural properties were classified in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, of which 173 were Monuments and 7 Sets. By protection category, 113 properties in the Region (62.7%) were of municipal interest, 60 were of public interest (33.3%) and 7 were national monuments (3.9%). The classified properties in the Region, correspond to 3.9% of those existing at a national level.
In the year in reference, the botanical gardens and aquariums considered for the Autonomous Region of Madeira were visited by 370.3 thousand people (+49.1% compared to 2020), mostly foreigners (88.4%). Note that compared to 2019, there is a drop in visitors of 48.2%.
