DREM releases Culture indicators
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today on its website the time series on Culture, Sport and Recreation updated with information for 2021.
The COVID-19 pandemic continued to affect the Culture, Sport and Leisure sector due to restrictions imposed by the authorities to control and mitigate it.
Museums had more than twice as many visitors as in 2020 and art galleries with more exhibitions, but with lower figures than in 2019
In 2021, the 17 museums in the Autonomous Region of Madeira which met the 5 eligibility criteria of the Museums Survey displayed 102.2 thousand goods and had 187 thousand visitors, up by 159.5% from 2020 (72 thousand persons). 71.4% of the visitors were foreign (133.5 thousand) and 5.4% were from school groups (10.2 thousand). Compared with 2019, the number of visitors decreased by 12.2%.
In 2021, data collected from Survey on Art Galleries and Other Temporary Exhibition Spaces, show that there were 154 exhibitions (up by 35.1% from 2020) in which 1,028 authors exhibited 3,753 works (3,545 works in 2020), which means a 5.9% increase. This survey took place in the 34 spaces in activity in the Autonomous Region of Madeira. Compared to 2019, the number of exhibitions decreased by 41.0% and the works exhibited by 44.4%.
Periodical publications decreased in editions, annual copies, total circulation, and the number of sold copies
In the reference year, 25 periodical publications were counted in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (-2 than in 2020) which produced 876 editions, 4.8 million copies of overall circulation and 3.3 million copies of total circulation, of which 3.2 million copies were sold. Regarding the previous year, there were decreases in editions (-1.0%), in annual copies (-3.1%), in overall circulation (-16.1%) and in the number of copies sold (-15.9%).
Cinemas and live shows rose but were still harmed by the pandemic
In 2021, there were 8,783 cinema exhibitions in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, up by 14.3% over the previous year. The number of spectators in 2021 went up by 40.7% and stood at approximately 99.3 thousand, with ticket revenues amounting to 526 thousand euros, a 43.3% increase over the year 2020. Even though the results were better, the results of 2021 for this cultural activity continued to be affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Compared to 2019, the number of sessions decreased by 49.4%, the number of spectators dropped by 64.4% and revenues declined by 63.3%.
Last year, 674 live shows were performed, with a total of 66.1 thousand spectators, of which 25.0 thousand paid for the ticket, generating receipts of 215 thousand euros. Compared to 2020, there were increases in the number of shows (+51.5%), spectators (+57.9%) and tickets sold (+0.1%). On the other hand, revenues went down by 1.4%. In turn, compared to 2019, the number of live performance sessions (-49.0%), the number of spectators (-84.4%), the number of tickets sold (-64.9%) and the revenue generated (-77.1%) decreased.
In the botanical gardens and aquariums of the Region, 370.3 thousand visitors were counted in 2021, the majority of which were from foreign countries (88.4%). The number of visitors rose by 49.1% from the previous year and 48.2% from 2019.
Share of Local administration expenditure on culture and sports activities continued to decline
According to the 2021 “Survey on Financing of cultural, recreation and sports activities by the local administration”, in 2021 the share of expenditure by the local administration of Madeira in cultural and sports activities by municipalities was around 9.6 million euros, meaning an increase of 1.9% compared to 2020. This growth resulted essentially from the 1.7% increase recorded in current expenditure, which represented 93.7% of total expenditure on culture and sports. It should be noted that capital expenditure, although not very relevant (6.3% of total expenditure on culture and sport), increased by 4.2% compared to the previous year. In 2021, the share of culture and sport expenditure in the total expenditure of Local Authorities is set at 4.2%, which shows a decrease of 0.8 percentage points in 2020.
In 2021, of the total expenditure on those activities, 66.1% was destined for culture activities (6.3 million euros) and 33.9% for sport (3.3 million euros). Compared to the previous year, expenditure on cultural activities fell by 8.2%. Expenditure on sports activities and equipment increased by 29.6%. It should also be noted that the share of expenditure on culture and on sports concerning the total expenditure of the Regional Councils was 2.8% and 1.4%, respectively.
By areas, and in the case of cultural expenditure, "Performing arts" (1,710 thousand euros) and "Interdisciplinary activities" (1,709 thousand euros), accounted for 53.9% of total expenditure in culture followed by "Libraries and archives" with 17.2% (1,091 thousand euros). In the case of expenditure on sport, the most noteworthy were those relating to "Sporting activities", which corresponded to 41.4% of total expenditure on sport (1,345 thousand euros) and "Sports associations", which represented 33.7% (1,095 thousand euros).
