International Day for Monuments and Sites

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) is joining today in the celebration of the International Day for Monuments and Sites, established by the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) on April 18, 1982, and approved by the UNESCO General Assembly the following year. It is analysed the data provided by the Regional Directorate of Culture (DRC) for the year 2023, regarding the Monuments, Sites, and Ensembles of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM).

These data have been available since 2008 on the DREM's website, within the time series of Cultural Statistics. Today, we present a statistical table containing the 2023 information broken down by municipality. The cultural immovable assets classified in the ARM are characterised in terms of classification, architectural typology, protection category, and ownership.

In 2023, in the ARM, there were 180 classified cultural immovable properties distributed across two categories: 173 were monuments, and 7 were Ensembles. Typologically, the classified cultural properties were distributed in civil architecture (97), religious architecture (69), military architecture (8), and mixed architecture (6).

According to the protection category, 113 of the classified cultural immovables in the Region were of municipal interest, 60 were properties of public interest, and 7 were national monuments.

From the ownership perspective, 101 were privately owned, 73 were publicly owned, 5 were jointly owned, and for 1, the DRC reported an unconfirmed owner entity.
