Cinema indicators record a sharp decline following the permanent closure of one venue
The provisional data released by the Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual (ICA) for the 3rd quarter of 2025 reflect the permanent closure of one of the cinema venues located in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM).
During the 3rd quarter of 2025, a total of 2 144 cinema sessions were recorded in the ARM, representing a decrease of 47.2% compared with the same period in 2024.
The number of spectators amounted to 44 269, falling by 42.4% year-on-year, while box office revenue totalled 286.2 thousand euros, corresponding to a decline of 37.8% compared with the same quarter of the previous year.
In cumulative terms, data for the first nine months of 2025 indicate that cinemas in the ARM recorded 8 505 sessions, 143 977 spectators and 889.6 thousand euros in box office revenue. These figures represent decreases of 21.2% in the number of sessions, 8.6% in spectators and 4.4% in box office revenue, compared with the same period of 2024.
