DREM releases today on its website the publication “Demographic Statistics of the Autonomous Region of Madeira 2017”. This edition has been reformulated and is released with a new layout and new indicators. A more extensive analysis of the indicators is also available, with the goal of meeting the expectations of our users. The time series was also improved and extended with new indicators, in the areas of resident population, births, deaths and marriages.
The annual publication contains a summary of the main results, from where the following was extracted:
Resident Population
On the 31st of December of 2017, the resident population in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) was estimated at 254,368, of which 118,411 were men and 135,957 women. The crude rate of increase was -2.0‰ (-6.1‰ in 2016).
In 2017, the crude rate of natural change was -2.2‰, while the crude migratory rate stood at +0.2‰.
The proportion of youth population (population under 15 years old) continued to shrink in 2017, representing 13.9% of the total population (14.3% in 2016).
The proportion of older people (population aged 65 or over) maintained the increasing trend of the previous years, reaching 16.4% of the resident population (16.0% in 2016). As a result, the ageing ratio continued to rise, standing at 117.8 older persons per 100 young persons (111.5 in 2016).
Births
In 2017, 1,960 live births to mothers living in RAM were recorded, corresponding to an increase of 5.5% compared to the previous year.
The crude birth rate rose from 7.3 to 7.7 live births per 1,000 inhabitants between 2016 and 2017.
The total fertility rate increased from 1.07 children by women in fertile age in 2016 to 1.16 in 2017.
The mean age of women at birth of first child dropped slightly from 30.4 years in 2016 to 30.0 years in 2017, and the same happened with the mean age of women at birth of a child, which went from 32.1 years in 2016 to 32.0 years in 2017.
Around 54% of the live births were born outside of the marriage, 29.9% with cohabiting parents and 24.4% without.
Deaths
2,513 deaths were counted in 2017, down by 101 than in 2016.
The crude death rate was 9.9 deaths per 1,000 inhabitants, dropping from 2016 (10.2‰).
The number of deaths was higher in the Winter (238 deaths, on average) and lower in the Summer (202 deaths, on average).
In the year of reference, 7 deaths under 1 year and one dead fetuses were registered. The infant mortality rate in 2017 was 3.6‰ (2.7‰ in 2016).
In 2015-2017, life expectancy at birth for the population of the Autonomous Region of Madeira stood at 78.18 years; 74.25 years for men and 81.43 years for women.
Life expectancy at 65 years old for the population of the Autonomous Region of Madeira was 17.75 years: 15.12 years for men and 81.43 years for women.
Marriages
962 marriages were counted in 2017, an increase of 11.7% over the prior year (861 marriages).
The crude marriage rate was 3.8 marriages per 1,000 inhabitants.
The highest number of marriages was registered in September (141) and the lowest in March (45).
The mean age of marriage was 37.0 years for men and 34.2 years for women.
69.3% of the marriages sex were “first marriages” (both spouses are single).
66.6% of the marriages between people of the opposite were civil and 33.0% catholic.
There were 21 same-sex marriages (18 in 2016), 14 between men and 7 between women.
Divorces
In 2017, there were 556 divorces in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, down by 96 from the previous year.
The crude divorce rate was 2.2 divorces per 1,000 inhabitants (2.6‰ in 2016).
62.6% of the divorces were by mutual consent.
The mean age of divorce was 45.1 years for men and 42.5 years for women.
Foreign population
On the 31st of December of 2017, the foreign population with resident status totalled 6,720 (up by 10.0% from 2016).
The Venezuelan (14.4%), British (14.2%), Brazilian (12.1%) and German (7.0%) nationalities constitute the largest foreign communities residing in the Autonomous Region of Madeira.
The Venezuelan nationality had a sharp increase (38.0%) in the number of foreigners residing in the Region holding a residence permit (703 in 2016 and 970 in 2017).
