DREM releases today on its website the publication “Demographic Statistics of the Autonomous Region of Madeira 2018” and updates the time series which was also expanded with new indicators in the area of foreign population.
The annual publication contains a summary of the main results, from where the following was extracted:
Resident Population
On the 31st of December of 2018, the resident population in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) was estimated at 253,945, of which 118,585 were men and 135,360 women. The crude rate of decrease was -1.7‰ (-2.0‰ in 2017).
In 2018, the crude rate of natural change was -3.2‰, while the crude migratory rate stood at +1.5‰.
The proportion of youth population (population under 15 years old) continued to shrink in 2018, representing 13.5% of the total population (13.9% in 2017).
The proportion of older people (population aged 65 or over) maintained the increasing trend of the previous years, reaching 16.7% of the resident population (16.4% in 2017). As a result, the ageing ratio continued to rise, standing at 123.6 older persons per 100 young persons (117.8 in 2017).
Births
In 2018, 1,919 live births to mothers living in ARM were recorded, corresponding to a decrease of 2.1% compared to the previous year.
The crude birth rate rose from 7.7 to 7.6 live births per 1,000 inhabitants between 2017 and 2018.
The total fertility rate decreased from 1.16 children by women in fertile age in 2017 to 1.15 in 2018.
The mean age of women at birth of first child increased slightly from 30.0 years in 2017 to 30.3 years in 2018, and the same happened with the mean age of women at birth of a child, which went from 32.0 years in 2017 to 32.1 years in 2018.
Around 55% of the live births were born outside of the marriage, 30.7% with cohabiting parents and 24.3% without.
Deaths
2,730 deaths were counted in 2018, up by 216 from 2017.
The crude death rate was 10.7 deaths per 1,000 inhabitants, increasing from 2017 (9.9‰).
The number of deaths was higher in the Winter (271 deaths, on average) and lower in the Summer (206 deaths, on average).
In the year of reference, 4 deaths under 1 year and one dead fetuses were registered. The infant mortality rate in 2018 was 2.1‰ (3.6‰ in 2017).
In 2016-2018, life expectancy at birth for the population of the Autonomous Region of Madeira stood at 78.30 years; 74.34 years for men and 81.44 years for women.
Life expectancy at 65 years old for the population of the Autonomous Region of Madeira was 17.69 years: 15.04 years for men and 19.37 years for women.
Marriages
959 marriages were counted in 2018, a decrease of 0.3% over the prior year (962 marriages).
The crude marriage rate was 3.8 marriages per 1,000 inhabitants.
The highest number of marriages was registered in September (121) and the lowest in February (39).
The mean age of marriage was 37.7 years for men and 34.6 years for women.
68.7% of the marriages sex were “first marriages” (both spouses are single).
68.0% of the marriages between people of the opposite were civil and 31.8% catholic.
There were 19 same-sex marriages (21 in 2017), 10 between men and 9 between women.
Divorces
In 2018, there were 588 divorces in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, up by 32 from the previous year.
The crude divorce rate was 2.3 divorces per 1,000 inhabitants (2.2‰ in 2017).
67.2% of the divorces were by mutual consent.
The mean age of divorce was 45.7 years for men and 43.2 years for women.
Foreign population
On the 31st of December of 2018, the foreign population with resident status totaled 7,578 (up by 12.8% from 2017).
The Venezuelan (21.0%), British (13.2%), Brazilian (10.9%) and German (6.6%) nationalities constitute the largest foreign communities residing in the Autonomous Region of Madeira.
The Venezuelan nationality had a sharp increase (63.9%) in the number of foreigners residing in the Region holding a residence permit (970 in 2017 and 1,590 in 2018).
