Natural decrease of the population was higher than in 2019

Preliminary data of demographic statistics show that in 2020 the Autonomous Region of Madeira registered a natural decrease (-850 persons), since the number of live births in this period (1,858) was lower than the number of deaths (2,708). In 2019, the natural change had also been negative but less pronounced (-788 persons, the difference between 1,891 live births and 2,679 deaths). This the second highest natural decrease after 2014 (-993 persons).

In 2020, 6 deaths under 1 year and 5 dead foetuses were reported. In the 2019, the number of deaths under 1 year (5 deaths) and the number of dead foetuses (4 dead fetuses) were slightly lower.

In the period of reference, 612 marriages took place in the registry offices of the Region, down by 354 from 2019.
