DREM releases today on its website the publication “Demographic Statistics of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, 2020” and updates the Time Series on Demography.
The annual publication contains a summary of the main results, from where the following was extracted:
Resident Population – Population decrease in 2020
- On December 31st, 2020, the resident population in the Autonomous Region of Madeira was estimated at 253,923 (118,524 men and 135,399 women) – the lowest value since 2003 – representing a decrease of 331 persons compared to 2019.
- The crude rate of increase was -1.3‰ (+1.2‰ in 2019), as a result of a negative crude rate of natural change, -3.4‰, which overlapped the positive crude migratory rate, +2.1‰.
- The proportion of youth population (population under 15 years old) continued to shrink, representing 12.8% of the total population (13.1% in 2019).
- The proportion of elderly (population aged 65 and over) also maintained the increasing trend of the previous years, reaching 17.4% of the resident population (17.0% in 2019).
- As a result, the ageing ratio continued to rise, showing no signs of slowing down and standing at the highest value ever recorded: 136 older persons per 100 young persons (130 in 2019).
Births and Fertility – Low number of live births puts the Autonomous Region of Madeira far from the generations’ replacement threshold
- In 2020, 1,860 live births were recorded, corresponding to a decrease of 1.6% compared to the previous year.
- The crude birth rate declined from 7.4 to 7.3 live births per 1,000 inhabitants between 2019 and 2020.
- The total fertility rate dropped to 1.14 children per women in their child-bearing years (15-49 years), remaining considerably below the generations’ replacement threshold (2.1 children born per women).
- The mean age of mothers at birth of first child increased from 30.1 years in 2019 to 30.4 years in 2020. The mean age at birth of a child (regardless of birth order) increased slightly from 32.0 years to 32.1 years.
- Around 60% of the live births were born outside of the marriage, 36.4% with cohabiting parents and 23.2% without.
Mortality – Number of deaths in 2020 increased from the previous year
- 2,713 deaths were counted in 2020, in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, up by 34 from 2019 (+1.3%).
- The crude death rate was 10.7% deaths per 1,000 inhabitants (10.5‰ in 2019), reaching the highest value since 2002 (the same as in that year and in 2018).
- The number of deaths was higher in the Winter months (235 deaths, on average) and lower in the Summer (208 deaths, on average).
- In the year of reference, 6 deaths of children under 1 year of age were registered. The infant mortality rate was 3.2‰ (2.6‰ in 2019).
- In the 2018-2020 triennium, the average life expectancy at birth for the population of the Autonomous Region of Madeira stood at 78.52 years: 74.63 years for men and 81.52 years for women.
- The average life expectancy at age 65 for the total population was 17.72 years: Men aged 65 can expect to live an average of 15.08 years longer and women an average of 19.46 years longer.
Marriages and Divorces
Marriages – Number of marriages celebrated in 2020 was the lowest since there is a record
- 612 marriages were celebrated in 2020, representing a decrease of 36.6% over the previous year (966 marriages) and reaching the lowest value since 1970.
- The crude marriage rate dropped considerably to a minimum ever recorded of 2.4 marriages per 1,000 inhabitants.
- There were 19 same-sex marriages (22 in 2019), 12 between men and 7 between women.
- The highest number of marriages was registered in October (87) and the lowest in April (1).
- The mean age at marriage increased considerably in just one year, 2.5 years for men and 1.9 years for women, standing at 40.0 years for men and 36.8 years for women (37.5 and 34.9, respectively, in 2019).
- 60.3% of the celebrated marriages were “first marriages” (both spouses were single).
- 85.8% of marriages between people of the opposite sex were civil and 14.2% were catholic.
Divorces – Number of divorces was the lowest in the last 19 years
- In 2020, 511 divorces were decreed - down by 29 from 2019 - corresponding to a crude divorce rate of 2.0‰.
- 509 concerned opposite-sex divorces and 2 same-sex divorces (1 male and 1 female).
- The mean age at divorce was 47.6 years for men and 44.3 for women.
- Of the total divorces, only 23.7% resulted from marriages lasting more than 24 years.
Foreign Population – Foreigners residing in the Region hit a maximum in the last 13 years
- According with the Immigration and Borders Service (SEF), on December 31st, 2020, the foreign population with resident status in the Autonomous Region of Madeira reached 9,455 persons, representing an increase of 10.1% from 2019. The overall foreign population is the total of residence permits (9,455) since there was no registration of long-stay visas.
- The Venezuelan (24.5%), British (14.2%), Brazilian (9.5%), and German (6.6%) nationalities remain the largest foreign communities residing in the Region.
- There was a growth in the number of foreigners residing in the Region holding a residence permit with Venezuelan or British nationalities, representing an increase of +12.2% (from 2,066 in 2019 to 2,319 in 2020) and +21.8% (from 1,102 in 2019 to 1,342 in 2020), respectively.
