Number of divorces fell compared to the previous year reaching the lowest value in the last 20 years
Provisional data on marriages dissolved by divorce show that, in 2021, 451 divorces were decreed for couples whose residence was in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, down by 60 over 2020, which corresponds to a crude divorce rate of 1,8‰. The number of divorces recorded in 2021 is the lowest since 2002.
The total of divorces decreed concerned opposite-sex divorces since no same-sex divorces occurred.
Between 2020 and 2021, the municipality of Calheta (+8) was the only one to record an increase in the number of divorces.
Porto Moniz and Santana registered the lowest divorce rate (1.2‰ in both municipalities). In Santa Cruz (1.9‰) and Porto Santo (1.9‰), the number of divorces per 1,000 inhabitants exceeded the regional value (1.8‰).
In 2021, the average age at divorce was 48.0 years for men and 45.4 years for women (47.6 years and 44.3 years in 2020, respectively).
Of the decreed divorces, only 27.1% resulted from marriages lasting more than 24 years.
