In November 2023
Number of deaths decreased by 26.0% compared to the same month in the previous year, while the number of live births increased by 24.8%
In November 2023, 182 deaths were recorded in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), a figure lower than that observed in November 2022 (a decrease of 64 deaths or -26.0%). In the first eleven months of the year, there were 2,550 deaths, which is 280 fewer than in the same period last year (- 9.9%).
The assessment of "excess mortality," comparing the deaths in the reference month with the average values for the same month from 2016 to 2019, shows a mortality deficit of 11.9%. This reflects the fact that, over those years, the number of deaths was always higher than the value recorded in November 2023.
During this period, no dead foetuses were recorded nor deaths under the age of 1.
Also, in November 2023, there were 181 live births, representing an increase of 24.8% compared to the same month in 2022 (an increase of 36 births). The total number of live births recorded in the first eleven months of 2023 (1,603) was higher than that in the same period in 2022 (1,588), an increase of 0.9% (15 more live births).
The difference between live births and deaths resulted in a negative natural balance of 1 person in November 2023, which is much more favourable than in the same month of the previous year, where it was -101. In the first eleven months of 2023, the cumulative value of the natural balance was -947, showing a great improvement compared to the same period in 2022 (-1,242).
In the eleventh month of 2023, 71 marriages were celebrated, representing an increase of 16.4% compared to the number of marriages in November 2022 (an increase of 10 marriages). From January to November 2023, 1,037 marriages were celebrated, 18 fewer than in the same period last year (a decrease of 1.7%).
