Number of deaths fell by 16.8% compared to the same month in the previous year, while the number of live births decreased by 8.8%
In January 2024, 242 deaths were recorded in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), a figure lower than that observed in January 2023 (a decrease of 49 deaths or -16.8%).
The assessment of "excess mortality," comparing the deaths in the reference month with the average values for the same month from 2016 to 2019 (242 deaths on average), shows a mortality deficit of 8.3%. This reflects the fact that, over those years, as a whole, the number of deaths was always higher than the value recorded in January 2024.
During the reference period, 1 death under the age of 1 was recorded and no dead foetuses were registered.
Also, in January 2024, there were 146 live births, representing a decrease of 8.8% compared to the same month in 2023 (a drop of 14 births).
The difference between live births and deaths resulted in a negative natural balance of 96 persons in January 2024, which is much more favourable than in the same month of the previous year, where it was -131.
In the first month of 2024, 65 marriages were celebrated, representing a decrease of 1.5% compared to the number of marriages in January 2023.
