Number of deaths decreased by 7.5% compared to the same month of the previous year, while the number of live births increased by 0.7%
In March 2024, 221 deaths were recorded in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), a figure lower than that observed in March 2023 (a decrease of 18 deaths or -7.5%). Over the first three months of the year, there were 669 deaths, representing a decrease of 95 compared to the same period last year, equating to a -12.4% decrease.
The assessment of "excess mortality," comparing the deaths in the reference month (221 deaths) with the average values for the same month from 2016 to 2019 (251 deaths on average), shows a mortality deficit of 11.9%, reflecting the fact that, in those years as a whole, the number of deaths was always higher than the value recorded in March 2024.
In March 2024, no dead foetuses were recorded nor deaths under the age of 1.
Also, in March 2024, there were 143 live births, one more birth than in March 2023.The total number of live births recorded in the first three months of 2024 (415) was 4.6% lower than that recorded in the same period of 2023 (down by 20 live births).
The difference between live births and deaths resulted in a natural decrease of 78 persons in March 2024, which is less severe than in the same month of the previous year, where it was -97. In the first three months of 2024, the cumulative value of the natural balance was -254, showing an improvement compared to the same period in 2023 (-329).
In the third month of 2024, 69 marriages were celebrated, a value equal to the number of marriages held in March 2023. From January to March 2024, 185 marriages were celebrated, the same number than in the corresponding period of 2023.
