Number of deaths decreased by 8.2% compared to the same month in the previous year, while the number of live births increased by 1.5%
In April 2024, 212 deaths were recorded in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), a figure lower than that observed in April 2023 (a decrease of 19 deaths; -8.2%). Over the first four months of the year, there were 881 deaths, representing a drop of 114 compared to the same period last year, equating to a -11.5% decrease.
The assessment of "excess mortality," comparing the deaths in the reference month (212 deaths) with the average values for the same month from 2016 to 2019 (224 deaths on average), shows a mortality deficit of 5.1%, reflecting the fact that, in those years as a whole, the number of deaths was always higher than the value recorded in April 2024.
In April 2024, no dead foetuses were reported deaths under the age of 1.
Also, in April 2024, there were 136 live births, representing a 1,5% increase, that is, two more births than in April 2023. The total number of live births recorded in the first four months of 2024 (551) was 3.2% lower than that recorded in the same period of 2023 (-18 live births).
The difference between live births and deaths resulted in a negative natural balance of 76 persons in April 2024, which is less severe than in the same month of the previous year, when it was -97. In the first four months of 2024, the cumulative value of the natural balance was -330, showing an improvement compared to the same period in 2023 (-426).
In the fourth month of 2024, 78 marriages were celebrated, corresponding to an increase of 18.2% compared to the number of marriages held in April 2023 (12 more weddings). From January to April 2024, 263 marriages were celebrated, 12 more (+4.8%) than in the same period the previous year.
