Number of deaths decreased by 16.3% compared to the same month in the previous year, while the number of live births increased by 22.0%

In June 2024, the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) recorded 185 deaths, a decrease of 36 deaths (-16.3%) compared to June 2023. Over the first half of the year, there were 1,263 deaths, representing a reduction of 163 compared to the same period last year, equating to an 11.4% decrease. 

The assessment of "excess mortality," which compares the deaths in the reference month (185) with the average number of deaths for the same month from 2016 to 2019 (an average of 201), indicates a mortality deficit of 8.1%. This reflects the fact that, in those years, the number of deaths was consistently higher than the figure recorded in June 2024.

In June 2024, 1 death under the age of one and 1 dead foetus were reported.

Additionally, in June 2024, there were 150 live births, representing a 22.0% increase, that is, 27 more births than in June 2023. The total number of live births recorded in the first half of 2024 (847) was 1.7% higher than that recorded in the same period of 2023 (+14 live births).

The difference between live births and deaths resulted in a natural negative balance of 35 persons in June 2024, a less severe outcome than the negative balance of 98 recorded in June 2023.  Cumulatively, for the first six months of 2024, the natural balance was -416, reflecting an improvement compared to the same period in 2023 (‑593).

In June 2024, 117 marriages were celebrated, an increase of 12.5% compared to June 2023 (13 more marriages). From January to June 2024, 485 marriages were celebrated, 38 more (+8.5%) than in the same period the previous year.
