Number of deaths increased by 7.0% compared to the same month in the previous year, while the number of live births decreased by 8.9%

In July 2024, 230 deaths were recorded in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), a figure higher than that observed in July 2023 (15 more deaths; 7.0%). From January to July, a total of 1,493 deaths were recorded, which is 148 fewer than in the corresponding period of the previous year (-9.0%).

The assessment of "excess mortality," which compares the deaths in the reference month (230 deaths) with the average values for the same month from 2016 to 2019 (189 deaths on average), indicates an excess mortality of 21.5%. This reflects the fact that, over those years, the number of deaths was consistently lower than the value recorded in July 2024.

In July 2024, 2 deaths of foetus were reported and there were no deaths under 1 year of age.

Additionally, in July 2024, there were 133 live births, corresponding to a drop of 8.9% compared to the same month of 2023 (13 fewer births). The total number of live births recorded in the first seven months of 2024 (981) was 0.2% higher than that recorded in the same period of 2023 (2 more live births).

The difference between live births and deaths resulted in a negative natural balance of 97 persons in July 2024, more pronounced than in the same month of the previous year, where a value of -69 was recorded. In the first seven months of 2024, the cumulative value of the natural balance was -512, showing an improvement compared to the same period in 2023 (‑662).

In the seventh month of 2024, 131 marriages were celebrated, corresponding to a 3.0% drop compared to the number of marriages held in July 2023 (4 fewer marriages). From January to July 2024, 616 marriages were celebrated, 34 more (+5.8%) than in the same period the previous year.
