Diseases of the circulatory system remained as the most important death cause in the Region
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira releases today data on causes of death for 2017, which will be included in the publication “Health Statistics of the Autonomous Region of Madeira-2017”, to be released in the end of 2018.
In 2017, the diseases of the circulatory system remained as the main cause of death in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), generating 689 deaths, i.e. 27.4% of the 2,514 deaths (28.1% in 2016). In this group of diseases, the strokes were responsible for 200 deaths.
Malignant neoplasms were the second most important death cause in the Region in 2017, contributing with 588 deaths, 23.4% of the total (21.5% in 2016). In this group of diseases, larynx and trachea/bronchial/lung tumors killed 109 people (4.3% of the total number of deaths).
The diseases of the respiratory system were the third most important cause of death, generating 465 deaths, i.e. 18.5% of the total (20.3% in the previous year). Pneumonia culminated in 290 deaths, 11.5% of the total.
