DREM releases today on its website the publication “Health Statistics in the Autonomous Region of Madeira 2017”, a compilation of data concerning Health in the Autonomous Region of Madeira on several domains: Health staff, Hospitals, Pharmacies, Vaccination, Parturitions and Causes of Death. At the same time an update of the time series on Health Statistics 1979-2017 with new indicators on vaccination, legally induced abortion, deliveries, morbility and mortality by causes of death..
The annual publication contains a summary of the main results, from where the following was extracted:
Health staff (2017)
The number of physicians registered in the Guild at December 31st of 2017 was 1,032, up by 6.6% when compared to the corresponding day of 2016 (968 physicians at 31/12/2016). The number of physicians per 1,000 inhabitants maintained an upward trend, rising from 3.8 in 2016 to 4.1 in 2017.
In December 31st of 2017 the number of dentists was 193, up by 14 from 2016 (179).
In 2017, 2,221 nurses were registered in the Guild, which corresponded to 8.7 nurses per 1,000 habitants.
In 2017, the number of pharmacists was 235 (an increase of 6 pharmacists over 2016).
Health establishments
Hospitals (2017)
In 2017, there were nine hospitals in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, three of them official and the remaining six private.
In the year of reference, the average number of used hospital beds stood at 1,801, representing a ratio of 7.1 beds per 1,000 inhabitants.
There were 309.1 thousand medical consultations in the external consultation unit of hospitals, a higher figure when compared to 2016 (298.2 thousand consultations).
25.1 thousand persons stayed overnight as inpatients (25.7 thousand in 2016), corresponding to 546.8 thousand days of hospitalization.
29.1 surgeries (except small surgeries) per day were performed in the hospitals of the Autonomous Region of Madeira.
In the reference year, 122.5 thousand persons were attended in the emergency departments (132.5 thousand in 2016).
Pharmacies (2017)
In 2017, there were 65 pharmacies in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, 1 medicine depot and 18 points of sale for medicinal products not subject to a medical prescription (the same values as in the previous year).
There were 26 pharmacies per 100,000 inhabitants in 2017.
Vaccination (2017)
According to the data provided by the Institute of Health Administration and Social Affairs (IA Saúde), 93,429 vaccines of 38 different types were administered in the Autonomous Region of Madeira in 2017.
The number of vaccines administered under the Regional Imunisation Programme was 49,289. Outside this Programme the number of administered vaccines stood at 44,140.
Deliveries by mothers (2017)
1,936 deliveries by mothers residing in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (RAM) were carried out in 2017, representing a 6.0% increase over 2016 (+110 deliveries).
Twenty five of that total were deliveries of twins. In the year of reference, 77.4% of the deliveries were from mothers aged between 25 and 39 years.
Causes of death (2016 and 2017)
In 2017, there were 2,514 deaths of residents in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, corresponding to a 3.8% decrease from 2016 (2,614 deaths).
The diseases of the circulatory system remained as the main cause of death in the Autonomous Region of Madeira in 2017, generating 689 deaths, i.e. 27.4% of the 2,514 deaths (28.1% in 2016).
Malignant neoplasms were the second most important death cause in the Region in 2017, contributing with 588 deaths, 23.4% of the total (21.5% in 2016). In this group of diseases, larynx and trachea/bronchial/lung tumors killed 109 people (4.3% of the total number of deaths).
The diseases of the respiratory system were the third most important cause of death, generating 465 deaths, i.e. 18.5% of the total (20.3% in the previous year). Pneumonia culminated in 290 deaths, 11.5% of the total.
