DREM releases today on its website the publication “Health Statistics in the Autonomous Region of Madeira 2018” and the “Time Series on Health Statistics 1979-2018”
DREM releases today on its website the publication “Health Statistics in the Autonomous Region of Madeira 2018”, a compilation of data concerning Health in the Autonomous Region of Madeira on several domains: Health staff, Hospitals, Primary Health Care Units, Pharmacies, Vaccination, Parturitions and Causes of Death. At the same time an update of the time series on Health Statistics 1979-2018 with new indicators on vaccination, legally induced abortion, deliveries, morbility and mortality by causes of death.
The annual publication contains a summary of the main results, from where the following was extracted:
Health staff (2018)
The number of physicians registered in the Guild at December 31st of 2018 was 1,080, up by 4.7% when compared to the corresponding day of 2017 ( 1.032). The number of physicians per 1,000 inhabitants maintained an upward trend, rising from 4.1 in 2017 to 4.3 in 2018.
In December 31st of 2018 the number of dentists was 201, up by 8 from 2016 (193).
In 2018, 2,272 nurses were registered in the Guild (2,221 em 2017), which corresponded to 8.9 nurses per 1,000 habitants (8.7 in 2017).
In 2018, the number of pharmacists was 234 (a decrease of 1 pharmacist from 2017). In this year, there were 0.92 pharmacists per 1,000 habitants.
Health establishments
Hospitals (2018)
In 2018, there were nine hospitals in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, three of them official and the remaining six private.
In the year of reference, the average number of used hospital beds stood at 1,846, representing a ratio of 7.3 beds per 1,000 inhabitants.
There were 295.2 thousand medical consultations in the external consultation unit of hospitals, a smaller figure than in 2017 (309,1 thousand consultations). This drop was driven by a decrease in the private sector since the number of medical consultations in the public sector grew.
25.8 thousand persons stayed overnight as inpatients (25.1 thousand in 2017), corresponding to 550.8 thousand days of hospitalisation.
32.4 surgeries (except small surgeries) per day were performed in the hospitals of the Autonomous Region of Madeira.
In the reference year, 118.3 thousand persons were attended in the emergency departments (122.5 thousand in 2017).
Primary health care units (2017)
According to the information provided by SESARAM (Health Service of the Autonomous Region of Madeira), in 2017, there were 7 official clinics and 47 functional units in the Autonomous Region of Madeira. Eight of the official clinics offered basic emergency services (1 had an inpatient system), while 7 provided domestic support services.
In 2017, 337,319 outpatient appointments were carried out in the Official Clinics, a 1.2% decrease from 2016 (341,510).
130,705 patients were attended in the emergency services in 2017, down by 4.6% from 2016 (137,074).
Pharmacies (2018)
In 2018, there were 65 pharmacies in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, 1 medicine depot and 18 points of sale for medicinal products not subject to a medical prescription (the same values as in the previous year).
There were 26 pharmacies per 100,000 inhabitants in 2018.
Vaccination (2018)
According to the data provided by the Institute of Health Administration and Social Affairs (IA Saúde), 105,014 vaccines of 45 different types were administered in the Autonomous Region of Madeira in 2018.
The number of vaccines administered under the Regional Imunisation Programme was 56.516. Outside this Programme the number of administered vaccines stood at 48,498.
Deliveries by mothers (2018)
1,898 deliveries by mothers residing in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (RAM) were carried out in 2018, representing a 2.0% decrease over 2017 (1,936 deliveries). Twenty eight of that total were deliveries of twins.
In the year of reference, 79.9% of the deliveries were from mothers aged between 25 and 39 years.
Causes of death (2018)
In 2018, there were 2,730 deaths of residents in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, corresponding to a 8.6% increase from 2017 (2,514 deaths).
The diseases of the circulatory system remained as the main cause of death in the Autonomous Region of Madeira in 2018, generating 788 deaths, i.e. 28.9% of the 2,730 deaths (27.4% in 2017).
Malignant neoplasms were the second most important death cause in the Region in 2018, contributing with 595 deaths, 21.8% of the total (23.4% in 2017).
The diseases of the respiratory system were the third most important cause of death, generating 516 deaths, i.e. 18.9% of the total (18.5% in the previous year).
