DREM releases today on its website the publication “Health Statistics in the Autonomous Region of Madeira 2019” and the “Time Series on Health Statistics 1979-2019”
DREM releases today on its website the publication “Health Statistics in the Autonomous Region of Madeira 2019”, a compilation of data concerning Health in the Autonomous Region of Madeira on several domains: Health staff, Hospitals, Pharmacies, Vaccination, Parturitions and Causes of Death. At the same time DREM updates the time series on Health Statistics 1979-2019 with the 2019 data on causes of death.
The annual publication contains a summary of the main results, from where the following was extracted:
Health staff
The number of physicians registered in the Guild at December 31st of 2019 was 1,129, up by 4.5% when compared to the corresponding day of 2018 (1.080). The number of physicians per 1,000 inhabitants maintained an upward trend, rising from 4.3 in 2018 to 4.4 in 2019.
In 2019, 2,335 nurses were registered in the Guild (2,272 in 2018), which corresponded to 9.2 nurses per 1,000 habitants (8.9 in 2018).
In 2019, the number of pharmacists was 237 (a increase of 3 pharmacists from 2018). In this year, there were 0.93 pharmacists per 1,000 habitants.
Health establishments
Hospitals
In 2019, there were ten hospitals in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, three of them official and the remaining seven private.
In the year of reference, the average number of used hospital beds stood at 1,868, representing a ratio of 7.4 beds per 1,000 inhabitants.
There were 315.3 thousand medical consultations in the external consultation unit of hospitals, a higher figure than in 2018 (295.2 thousand consultations).
8 thousand persons stayed overnight as inpatients (25.8 thousand in 2018), corresponding to 576.5 thousand days of hospitalisation.
3 surgeries (except small surgeries) per day were performed in the hospitals of the Autonomous Region of Madeira.
In the reference year, 125.2 thousand persons were attended in the emergency departments (118.3 thousand in 2018).
Pharmacies (2019)
In 2019, there were 65 pharmacies in the Autonomous Region of Madeira and 1 medicine depot (the same values as in the previous year). There were also 18 points of sale for medicinal products not subject to a medical prescription (2 more than in 2018).
There were 26 pharmacies per 100,000 inhabitants in 2019.
Vaccination
According to the data provided by the Institute of Health Administration and Social Affairs (IA Saúde), 105,864 vaccines were administered in the Autonomous Region of Madeira in 2019.
The number of vaccines administered under the Regional Imunisation Programme was 57,539. Outside this Programme the number of administered vaccines stood at 48,325.
Deliveries by mothers
1,862 deliveries by mothers residing in the Autonomous Region of Madeira were carried out in 2019, representing a 1.9% decrease over 2018 (1,898 deliveries). Twenty nine of that total were deliveries of twins.
In the year of reference, 76.6% of the deliveries were from mothers aged between 25 and 39 years.
Causes of death (2019)
In 2019, there were 2,679 deaths of residents in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, corresponding to a 1.9% decrease from 2018 (2,730 deaths).
The diseases of the circulatory system remained as the main cause of death in the Autonomous Region of Madeira in 2019, generating 797 deaths, i.e. 29.7% of the 2,679 deaths (28.9% in 2018). Compared to the preceding year, deaths provoked by these diseases increased by 1.1%
Malignant neoplasms were the second most important death cause in the Region in 2019, contributing with 622 deaths, 23.2% of the total (21.8% in 2018). The number of deaths due to malignant neoplasms went up by 4.5% compared to the prior year.
The diseases of the respiratory system were the third most important cause of death, generating 444 deaths, i.e. 16.6% of the total (18.9% in the previous year). Compared to the preceding year, the deaths due to this cause dropped by 14.0%. From that overall number of deaths, 259 are attributed to pneumonia (313 in 2018).
